From experience, if you have a strong credit repayment history already and are NOT on it, it matters much less to be on it than it would if you are not on it and have little credit history showing on your file.

Indeed there are people on here who are not on it yet have managed to get great credit deals due to having a strong credit history.

I am a UK resident, however, I am still not eligible to be on electoral roll.

I have two cards with amex, 2 barclaycard, 1 halifax clarify and recently got accepted for mbna to do a balance transfer...

moral of the story... I don't think it's a big deal if you are or not registered on electoral roll.

    :)

Very slightly off topic here but does it matter if you're registered at more than one address?

My understanding is that legally speaking it is perfectly acceptable to be registered at 2 addresses provided you only use 1 vote.

I'm registered at my parent's address and my "home" address, in different locations.

Will this harm my credit report or make no difference? Any thoughts....

Anyone any thoughts on my post above?

My wife is from the US and so can't be on the electoral roll as she's not eligible to vote. Getting credit was a struggle for her at first but she just got instantly accepted for a Halifax card with a £4k limit so she seems to be OK now. I think being on the electoral roll becomes less and less significant as you increase the number of entries in your credit file.

Thats right malcolm, if you already have lots of credit products at an address then potential lenders can see you have some stability and see you are using and repaying credit at that address.

It usually becomes more difficult again if you move to a new address and want new credit soon after the move.

Jakes - sorry not sure what impact it would have. Does your credit file show that your are on the ER at 2 addresses? I would have thought that if all your credit products are at one of the ER addresses that it shouldn't be a big issue.

Yes it does show both addresses.
As you say all my credit accounts are registered at only one of the addresses.
As far as I know it isn't having a detrimental affect on my credit rating but as this is unique to each lender it could be. I'm particularly concerned that their systems may not cope with 2 active addresses and may reject an application purely because the first address on my credit report is not the address I use on my credit applications...

Is there any particular reason/need for you to want to stay on the ER at both places?

I was never on it because I never understood the importance of it and I don't vote so never thought anymore of it. :S

Well - It's a legal obligation to give the information required.

If someone doesn't register, then apart from the difficulty of proving their address, lenders will obviously think - if this person refuses to comply with a simple, straightforward and reasonable legal requirement, what is their attitude likely to be towards complying with the terms of a credit agreement and paying off their debts?

    Perfectly sensible to me.

Apart from that - you only have to look to the Middle East and Africa to see ordinary people literally risk (and sometimes lose) their lives because they want more say in how their country is run.
We are very lucky to have the freedoms that we have, which have been won at the cost of hundreds of thousands of British and other lives. We owe it to those people to make use of the freedom we have.
