UK Car Hire - Fuel Charge

Does anyone else have experience of additional fuel charges being added by Alamo/Europcar at Gatwick Airport?
When I returned my hired Peugeot on 3 July the Polish rep in the car park said the tank was only 7/8 full. I had filled up the previous night, and driven maximum 10-15 miles thereafter. I told him I would top it up, left the car park again, and at the filling station immediately adjacent to the car park had to drip feed the tank to get the minimum 2 litre delivery in; I returned the car, left the petrol receipt with him, and he underscored my return slip to show no additional charge payable, and said that the fuel gauge may be faulty, but that any shortages in fuel were deducted from their wages.
I have now had a 13.49GBP charge taken from my credit card.
I am disputing this with Alamo, and would be interested to know if others have had the same; I have friends who have told me of this also happening to them. I will also be taking this up with Trading Standards.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
