    What is a 'contactless' card?

    Sorry for ignorance.

A card with Near Field Communications.

I don't know why people are using the term "contactless" rather than NFC

Customers automatically get a debit card with the Cash Card Account when opening this account. Existing customers can get this upgraded without a check.

This type account is not credit checked.

Near field isn't particularly accurate for devices that can be read from 60cm to a couple of meters away by using higher than standard reader powers.

For those who don't know it, the card reader broadcasts the radio signal that is used to generate the power to operate the chip in the card. How far away you can read from depends on the power of that radio signal.

Contactless is a safer word for marketing. It doesn't require use of the word "near" which may be found to be deceptive in security assertions about the technology. It's also more understandable for a general audience.

    4659 is also contactless ;)
    4658 is not

    Not *quite* correct...

Late last year I opened up a business account with Barclays for my limited company and they gave me a white Visa debit card which starts with 4658 - this also has the contactless symbol on it.

I recently opened a personal account with them - for some reason I could only open a cash card account with them not a "normal" one (probably because I just moved house and am not on the electoral roll here yet? although apparently I am able to open up a "normal" account in 6 months time - weird!).

Anyways this new personal account also has a Visa debit card that starts with 4658 but does not have the contactless symbol on it.

Maybe 'book12' can shed some light on this?...
