If Barclays wont give you a debit card

For a couple of years Barclays have been saying that I have been refused for a debit card. Having a bad credit record I was not surprised.

During a visit to the bank the lady I was seeing said 'do you have a debit card?' and when I said no she said that she would order me one...

I told her not to bother because it would be refused, to which she said 'no it wont'. I smiled but knew it would be refused.

But then she said 'there you go, all ordered for you'.

It turns out... if you have a Barclays account with no debit card, they give you a white chip and pin card to use with your card reader to access internet banking. This card cannot be used in cash machines or to buy anything, it is only for accessing internet banking.

If you have one of these cards issued, you cannot have a debit card, no matter what your credit score says, if a bank rep tries to order you a debit card it will be declined. But if they cancel that white card before ordering your debit card, your debit card will be issued. If you have bad credit that card will not be a cheque guarantee though.

So if Barclays are denying you a debit card, that will probably be why.

I just wish the banks would train the staff like they used to. At least you finally found a staff member that knew what she was doing.

Why dont you wait and see if a debit card turns up.

As my understanding is if you have a cash account it does not matter if you have a debit or ATM card with Barclays.

  • Yeah, for ages I carried cash instead of a card, and all because the staff at my Barclays branch didn't know about the white chip and pin card affecting debit card applications.

When i opened my barclays account they said to me its a cash card account - i was like what!? they then said to me i cannot get a main current account with cheque book overdraft etc

    (didn't want overdraft anyway)

but HSBC/TSB gave me one 0_o for a while i had the debit card for barclays which was a cash card !!!!!! account, never used it chucked in a few pounds here and there, and 8 months later i phoned up and requested the 'CURRENT ACCOUNT' they said to me i cant because im not working, (which is a bs excuse) all i wanted is a full auth debit card/contacless/cheque book.. etc. I then told her i have this with TSB/HSBC then all of a sudden she changed her mind and gave me the current account........... typical that.

Is it a full current account debit card or you still with a cash card account? (there basically the same account) does the card start with 4658 or 4659 ?

    Cash card account 4658

I'm currently settling debts, carefully, and trying to get some stuff taken off my file, so may cash card account is fine. To be honest I have no need for cheques or overdrafts. For a while though, they would only give me cash card, that was a nightmare.

so if i was to upgrade to a 'full current account' i should get a new debit card with 4659? but the same account number yea?

(because mine is 4658) and i was told I've been upgraded... (hmmm)
