is that a different post 4 to the one on this thread?

The only thing that was asked on post 4 was

which is different to asking what's actually happening

What on earth are you on about this time?

We know what is happening, but we need to stop the 'loop' so that we can view the error message. See post #5.

no, more like what are you on about. Nobody knows where it's looping and for your post 5 comment..
XP - disable in Control Panel
Vista - disable in Control Panel
Windows 7 - disable in Control Panel

nobody knows what's happening or if there's an error message. The OP has posted:
Our compaq presario desktop will not boot.It is just in a loop.Have tried system restore, start up repair a d changed boot order to boot from recovery cd.
    Any ideas?
Have tried all of those options but just goes in a loop
Thanks it is a sr5129 quite old now running vista and has had ram added some years ago.
It was working fine then froze and would not restart.found recovery disks and changed boot order but still no joy.does not really sound as if it is trying IYSWIM.
Off to work now bit will try it later
Giving up ! Thanks for suggestions
So unless you can see something that nobody else can... there's absolutely no information about what's happening and definitely no error message. All we can judge is that it's letting them hit F8 to bring up the boot menu, no mention of any error at all.

Don't most people look at what comes on screen to find out what is happening - it's obvious further clarification was being asked for.

Op has given up anyway, so carrying on is pointless unless they come back. These threads usually end up in a visit to pc world or the like, followed by a "help I've lost all my data".

What does that say to you?

It says to me that it starts to boot, fails and then re-starts. There is no error message, likely because Disable automatic restart on system failure has not been selected.

it says to me that it won't boot and that's all. it doesn't say how long after attempting to boot up, or if anything seems to flash up.

it could go off the BIOS screen and then reboot,
it could reboot within seconds of the window splash screen coming on
it could be on the splash screen for a while before rebooting
it could get to the log on screen and then reboot.

so yes, it does start to boot and then re-start but as i've already said.. they didn't say what exactly happens so it's virtually impossible to determine whether it's a hardware or driver / software issue.

So if the OP had answered my question we would have the answer.
