Feeling down...

Ive just got my degree, and a temping job so I should feel pretty good right? The truth is Im feeling so rubbish I could cry.

I am litterally so tired for a start, partly because my job is pretty full on and Im not used to it and partly because I hardly get any sleep. I wake up around 4am (or whenever it gets light) and just simply cannot get back to sleep, the time I am asleep its incredibly broken and wake up constantly - normally when OH takes the quilt/snores etc - you get the picture. I consistently have 4 hours or less sleep and now Im working a 8.5hour shift plus 2 hours of travelling on top of that Im just exhausted.

Last night I maybe slept for about an hour, some wierd noise has developed in the flat upstairs, imagine the sound of a bass drum, every 5 mins or so, it started at around midnight, and at 7am this morning it was still going now and again. Im so fed up with my flat now, I have been for a long time but lately everything is driving me mad with it - upstairs arguing / sounding like elephants / playing piano at 7am / ceiling leaking every time they shower etc.

My temp job - is ok, and to be honest would do it happily for the full time money they are offering, the agency said it was almost a dead cert I would be made permanent and talking to other employees there who temped some of them were asked to be permanent the day they started. I havent had any kind of indication how long Im even meant to be there on a temp basis let alone if they even want to keep me on.
My department called a meeting this morning to talk about the changes coming soon, and said they were going to be employing two more staff - I spoke to the manager after to basically see what the situation was with me and he said he would consider it and let me know by the end of the day. Didn't see him again.
Now Im feeling incredibly fed up, Ive given up my job search to work there, have no idea how long Im likely to be there for and they seem reluctant to employ me (despite me doing more work than thier trained staff I hasten to add) and yet now talking about getting 2 totally untrained new people in!

To add to all that my temp job is leaving me in even more of a temporary financial mess - the agency pay 2 weeks in arrears, so I have to wait what seems like forever until I get paid, I have to pay the bus fare every day (money I don't have) alongside lunches every day - Im having to borrow the money just so I can work....

The house is a mess as Im just too physically tired to do anything which makes me feel even worse, OH thinks Im in a bad mood now and just keeping out of my way :(

Sorry for the long rant....

Sounds like your tired and just need some well earned rest and sleep!! Have you tried herbal sleep remedies, ear plugs to block out noise, black out blind for the light morning wake up calls maybe even sleep in a spare room or on sofa if needs be just to catch on some sleep.

You mention noise in the flats where you live have you reported the noise levels? From midnight til morning is not right at all and needs to be sorted out, could the drumming noise be a maintenance issue? worth checking with upstairs about the leak and noise.
I feel for you as i`m a nightmare when i`m tired and i normally feel quite ill if i`ve been deprived of a good few nights sleep.

Speak with your OH tell him what you`ve said here - show him this thread if needs be, if he realises how your feeling 100% he may help with house chores then thats one less thing to worry about.

Re: work you mention you `do more then the trained staff` is this off your own back? if so cut back and do what your there to do, working flat out isnt helping you at the moment especially if your finding it full on and tbh it don`t always get you far ie, not better thought of.
I would relax about the issue regarding being made permanant you don`t know for sure that your not being chosen SO just go with the flow. He may have a valid reason for not getting back to you today.

The trouble is with my place is its an old victorian building and the bedroom has absolutely massive, almost floor to celing bay windows which just let in so much light - I looked at the cost of new curtains/blinds but it would cost a small fortune as its not standard size and as its a rented property its money I could never justify anyway.

The noise last night is most certainly an issue with the pipes Im sure, probably because upstairs had thier heating on all of yesterday evening (yes I can even hear that too!)
As for the leak the LL said they couldn't find anything wrong upstairs and couldn't understand why it was doing it, he couldn't replicate it....
We are looking at moving but until I get a permanent job its not an option.....

As for the work - yes Im doing more off my own back but thats only because I find it pretty simple iykwim. For some reason, without trying I get twice the amount done as everyone else, I don't see how the rest of them can possibly be that slow!
Ie. X takes them 15 minutes, it takes me 8
Y takes them 45 minutes, it takes me between 15-20

On my first day the target for the entire team was to get through a set of 25 things - I did 34 on my own!
I think its probably just because I did something similarish in my last job and the pace there was a lot quicker.....

I litterally cannot wait for the weekend and have a lie in!

It sounds like tension and stress during the day is making it difficult for you to relax and sleep at night, and on top of that there are noises which are keeping you awake.

The company I used to work for were also a bit inconsistent with who they decided to take on as permanent staff and when. On the bright side, though, if you are a temp you only need to give a week's notice if you happen to spot a better opportunity :) (Agencies in my experience tend to tell the employee what they want to hear..)

Work on keeping your stress levels at bay. A job is important but not worth risking your health for. I speak from experience!

Is it possible to move to a quieter area/flat?

How about thick heavy lined side curtains maybe a eye mask. I was going to suggest window film of some sort but then it will block light out during the day.

charlie, sorry to hear about your situation. lack of sleep can really get to you!

I used to have the same problem with waking up, seemed I was very tuned into daylight patterns. Now I wear a sleeping mask and I sleep so much better! Only cost a few quid so it mught be worth trying it out...

My OH sometimes uses earplugs and they really seem to help him with nightime noise. again, pretty cheap to give a go.

anyway, hope find a way to feel better soon :)

Have you tried ebay, or charity shops, or even asking round your family for curtains? If you're not fussy about colours you can get some bargains. I know how you feel about the light - I'm a terrible sleeper (what is it with 4am waking??) and our old place had huge bay windows that I couldn't afford to cover, but my mum gave me some old velvet curtains which made a huge difference.

Try Avons sleep therapy, it works a treat.

Ummm.... Is it possible for you to take some days off for vacation? I just think you need fresh air, a new situation that can bring you a new energy. And for your sleep problem, I would go with that sleep therapy or anything that can make you feel relax at the time you lay in your bed.
  • You could buy fleece blankets for about £2 each from somewhere like Tesco or Argos and use safety pins to attach them to the curtain linings without damaging them - cuts out some noise, light and will make the place warmer in the winter.

If you have a double bed and quilt, buy a kingsize quilt. If you have kingsize, buy superking. It makes duvet thieving less likely, as would having another blanket or throw on the bed so you can make sure that you aren't left freezing cold by your OH. Wearing warm pyjamas would also help, as you won't be as cold as if you slept naked, for example.

You can get silicone earplugs from Boots for a couple of pounds. They will cut out a lot of noise from upstairs.

And try and take things easy when you get in from work. Listen to nice music on your iPod on the way home first, then don't rush around trying to do everything, have a sit down with a cuppa/glass of wine/juice. Maybe even head straight for the shower when you get in the door.

But don't make the rest of the team look bad at work, as putting their backs up won't be good for permanent employment prospects. Be aware if you're frantically dashing around, unable to stop and talk and smile at people, they could have an idea that you are suffering from severe anxiety and are potentially going to make yourself ill from it.

Just chill. I'm awake, have been all night and whilst I am not impressed with the situation, I can't alter the fact that I'm awake, so I am less stressed about it than someone going 'ohmigodohmigodi'mawakeagaini'mnevergoingtogetagoodnight'ssleepagaininmylife i'mgoingtolosemyjobandihatemyupstairsneighboursandandandand.....' :)
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Just to add - are you getting any exercise at all? It really can make a difference both to your stress levels and to your quality of sleep. Even a 30 min walk at lunchtime would help.
