I had a cat go missing and was never able to find out what happened to him. I made posters, leaflets, put an advert in the paper, left messages with vets, etc. It gives me comfort to think that someone kind found him and was thoughtful enough to bury him. I think you and your family have done a very nice thing.

So sorry you had such an upset. :( Please please take the cat to be scanned for a microchip. Vets can be very negative about scanning as many owners don't bother to get their cat chipped, but those of us who do really want to be sure they know what happens to our cats. Most ex-rescues are chipped now too. The cat may not be local as some have territories of many miles, or jump into the back of a delivery van: the owners may not see the local newspaper or speak to your nearest vet.

I got my girl microchipped this afternoon even tho she is indoor only - she is a young stray, obviously been well cared for in her early months. The lady who found her after a car accident put adverts in papers etc. it's so sad her owners could not be found without a microchip. :(

Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I would have done the same as the Op, I would have asked around and maybe had a found put in our local free paper. Dont beat yourself up, we all do things on the spur of the moment at least the poor kitty is at peace in your garden where its safe xxx
RIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Always in our hearts xxx

  • I think Op did right to bury the poor cat !
If it had managed to crawl into undergrowth or beneath a bush after it had been injured, and then died, no-one would have known anything about it !
It would then have been left to any wild animals/insects to feast on and the owners would have been non the wiser as to its whereabouts.

We were driving on the A9, maybe 20 miles south of Perth and there was a poor black and white cat lying dead in the middle of the dual carriageway.

We swerved to avoid hitting it further but couldn't stop as the road was so busy.

I felt for the poor owner but couldn't do anything practical unfortunately.

Hopefully your efforts will result in the cat's owners finding you and ultimately them knowing what happened to their pet. The cat is buried now, and I think it's a case of letting him stay where he is. If the vet did take him the chances are he'd end up being cremated with a lot of other unfortunate creatures. You treated him with respect which can only be good. That's so much better than just letting him lie on the road to be swept away by the refuge collectors or run over multiple times until he's just an unpleasant red smear on the road.

aliasojo...it's horrible to have to drive past and do nothing...but while it is a deeply unpleasant thought the cat's suffering was already over regardless of what happened to his body after his death. It was wiser to have left him there rather than stopping and risking an accident.

i dont think i could have possibly dug it up now it is safe from anymore harm.....
i have put the word out and also the local shop and hairdressers that if anyone has lost a cat they are to come and see me and i will tell them what has happened.. then it is up to them what they want to do.... i bet they would wish for it to be left undisturbed..

in some respect i am glad that we found it and not just anyone who might have just chucked it over the hedge or dumped it in the bin, at least it has had a decent burial by my lovely hubby....

but i know what to do if it happens again .......
