How do I take my BT number to Virgin?

Hi can anyone help me please as this issue is really confusing me.
I have arranged an installation for Virgin to put in a phone line next week (I already have Broadband with them). When I first agreed the deal over the phone no mention was made of keeping my original BT phone number so I just assumed this was done as a matter of course.
Since then I have rung Virgin back and they have said that I need to ring BT to cancel my account with them and AFTER the installation I should ring them (Virgin) to swap the phone numbers over.
However when I spoke to BT they said that if I cancel with them the phone number will be lost and Virgin will not be able to take it.
Who is right here?
What should I do?
Please help.

Virgin can take the number however the are some circumstances where they can't,but in my experiences as an Engineer,in 98% of cases they can.You need to as to 'Port' your number over.
Try asking here;

thanks for the replies.
If it is possible to keep the number who should I be speaking to to make it happen?
Also do I not cancel BT in the meantime?0 -
IIRC,you have to contact VM & tell them you want to port your existing number to VM,VM will give you a temporary number & then transfer your number over once the install is completed.Make sure the VM installers site the new phone socket next to the BT one & transfer any phone extensions over to the VM one.0

Dont cancel BT, you will loose your number, it has to be ported and virgin should be dealing with this0

Vagildi - Spike is right. Once VM have completed the installation give it a few days for the job to be marked as complete on their systems and then call VM on 150.
Navigate the menu options and get to something along the lines of "changing your services", and ask them to port your number. They'll contact BT and do the necessary assuming it can be ported.
VM even arranged for my BT account to be closed....although I have been keeping an eye on this to make sure I've got a final bill and there's no chance that BT will continue billing me for my old landline. Can't imagine that BT would/could mess that bit up :eek:0
