House near a train line

I currently live in a flat that is close to the train line. Noise from the trains during the days and evenings is acceptable. But the thing that bothers me is that the maintenance depot is very close by. Overnight it is in use with passing trains and horns at stupid o'clock in the morning. There is also a tannoy system in use that I guess the managers use to pass on orders to the maintenence persons and drivers, just to give it more of a George Orwell's '1984' feel.
This morning at approximately 12.30am I was treated to the grinding sound of metal against metal...I'm guessing it was a train driver testing the braking system.
To take a broader view, the noise is less of an issue in the winter when windows are closed but in the summer, windows ajar let the noise in.Generation Rent0 -
Yes I used to live in a flat where I could see the train platform from the kitchen window. It wasn't so bad most of the time but when the freight trains went past in the early hours of the morning it wasn't fun.0

Ah, train lines - do these run between train stations? Are they the same thing as railways?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Thanks guys.
Sorry I should have gave more details!
I am looking at a house that is about 150ft away from a train line.
It is 2 mins away from the station and there are no tunnels near it.
the line is not used for heavy goods and the last train is about 11pm.
I was just a bit worried about noise.0 -
My house is less than that away from a local line - trains from 06:30 until 23:30 or thereabouts. I don't really hear it any more, didn't take much getting used to either.0

check the rail timetable and go stand nearby when a train goes past... only way to find out how loud it'll be! i lived near a railway line a few years ago and after the first few weeks, didn't notice it at all. but i did like being about to run (in a last minute panic!) to the station in about 2 mins!:happyhear0

Close to train line usually = close to train station = excellent commuter links to wherever you want to go.0

Yes, for 23 or so years.
It's at the back of my parent's garden but about 35ft up an embankment. The line isn't a busy one, normally for goods trains or the steam onesThe noise has never concerned our family at all, nor the proximity to the line.
I quite like it in a way, as there's no-one overlooking you at the back when you're in the garden.0 -
My son lives next to a station and it's not an issue at all. I'd be happy to live there.Slightly bitter0

I'm a very light sleeper, so living next to a railway line is a no no for me. But I know some people that snore as loud as elephants and won't wake up, so I suppose those sorts of people would be OK!0
