This is a genuine bargain for those looking for a cheap laptop. As a 'techie' I have to say that some of the comments regarding this latop have been way over the top. To describe this as comparable to a '10 year old laptop' shows a complete lack of knowledge of computers (10 years ago you would have had a 386 processor with a 60Mhz processor if you were buying top of the range, and costing over £2000). Unless you intend to download and store lots of whole films or thousands of music files then a 20Gb hard drive is more than ample for most uses.
I would buy this for £199 and add as much memory as the board allows (1Gb if possible) which would cost around £50 or less- the machine would then run Microsoft Office 2003 comfortably (mine runs on a slower laptop). For £250 you would have a laptop that would have cost you over £1000 a year ago.he's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy !0 -
oh and Windows Vista is a waste of space as far as I am concerned - it is basically Windows XP with the new aero-glass 'look' that most people will turn off when they see how much it cripples their system, irrespective of how fast a processor they have.
Expect to see Vista heavily discounted in the second half of 2007 as sales fail to take off.he's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy !0 -
Is this instore only as I can't find it on the site.0

'A bit' = £300?
Yes, but to be honest its worthwhile adding the extra, saving up, or even taking out Dixons interest free for 10 months.
Having bought a "cheap" laptop this time last year I know well the pitfalls, as has been mentioned here "you get what you pay for". My "cheap" laptop had a harddrive, power supply and motherboard all die within months. Each time it was sent away for repair, being away for 3 weeks or so at a time.
It was slow, it wouldnt run any of the kids games (the sims being one) and it struggled to cope with Paintshop Pro I was using for college. After the motherboard died Dixons conceeded defeat and I put some money to it and bought my Toshiba.
The difference is immense, as someone said earlier in the thread you can tell the difference when you have used both.0 -
The add in todays paper says £199 is a voucher price which I assume is the add its self as is states "take this into store"

You'd be better of getting a cheap one from somewhere like Dell. You can get one for £300-400 that will be much better than this one.
Plus It's PC WorldCome on you Irons0 -

Dixons interest free deals usually cost a fortune in interest!
If you have £500 or more to spend on a laptop buy a Toshiba or a Dell, (or if you can afford it, a Sony Vaio) but if you only have £350 buy an Acer at Tescos, and if all you can afford is £200 buy this from PC World. Simple really.he's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy !0 -
