have been to asda tonight and theirs contains the same as the boots ones....i still think the boots ones work better, yes i'm odd. I also bought some probiotic yogurts as a couple of people have mentioned them to me now.

Probiotic yougurt was given to my MIL when she was in hospital and had the Norovirus, and yes, it did help her. I would much rather try anything natural and preventative....but then thats just me!

I think there has been some support for aiding recovery of illness that has required antibiotics but not a great deal, and the evidence for intestinal problems is minimal and very sketchy at best. Meanwhile, people pay a premium for these products due to the 'medicinal' properties they are purported (and heavily promoted) to possess.

A great deal of medicine is based on natural substances, and there is no bigger preventative than vaccination - again based on taking inactive portions of the problem pathogen and stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the real thing if encountered.

I understand your point about the need to take copious amounts of anti-diarrhea medication but each pack clearly states it is NOT a cure, merely an aid to ease symptoms and to seek medical advice if they persist. If someone knows enough about it to want to be looking for the product by its active ingredient, I think it would be safe to assume they have at least read the instructions.

Promotion of probiotics for this issue is a bit off in my opinion, but then I don't believe in any of these 'holistic' approaches that seem to be ever increasingly popular. Apologies for the long post..............but be grateful you didn't recommend hypnotism or acupuncture! :o

Louise, please don't take this the wrong way, but what did you see in the original post that makes you think that they haven't aleady sought medical advice? Reading in between the lines of the replies to this thread, there are a few of us who have some sort of digestive problem. I have both irritable bowel syndrome AND Crohn's Disease (never do anything by halves, me:D), and lets face it, probiotic yoghurt may help, but it's never going to 'sort me out'.

My gastro and GP are happy for me to manage my problems, as they are pretty much under control at the moment. The Crohn's is in remission (no inflammation on last colonoscopy yay!) and I manage the IBS with Colpermin (peppermint oil), diet and aloe vera capsules. BUT I still have loperamide with me at all times, it's just one less thing to stress about, and also means that I have a chance of getting to see my GP in the event of a flare, and also of getting to a chemists to get a script filled....

I get frequent bouts of diarrhoea and I have got to the bottom of it. I have seen one of the preeminent gastroenterologists in the world, not just the country, and he has diagnosed ulcerative colitis and recommended that I use loperamide as a first line of defence, with steroids and anti inflammatories as back up if that fails. He was emphatic that any dietary changes, including probiotics, would make no difference.

I am quite sure I take loperamide more often than most of the population and like others on this thread I am very careful to ensure we always have some in our medicine cupboard. I personally would rather "bung myself up" with loperamide than eat yoghurt for breakfast and have a nasty accident on the school run, " but then that's just me"

Some posters would not contribute to a thread like this unless they had walked in our shoes, or had some professional expertise...

Hi MrsAtobe, could I ask what your diet consists of please?

I have IBS also and know some things to avoid which seem to trigger it, but knowing what works for other people would be useful.

In terms of loperamide - I get mine from Asda or Tesco - Asda seems to be limited to 2 per purchase (on self scan anyway). Both are around 76p I think. I am trying to not rely on it quite so much, but always make sure I have a supply just in case. I do find that they become less effective after taking them for so long.

Tesco always out of own brand most times we've needed to buy them. Very good value for around 76p.

Baby Bear,my diet is pretty varied, I just have to avoid certain foods. Mine are the classic onions, peppers and tomatoes, I have to restrict my fat intake and avoid overly spicy food.

The best suggestion I can give you is to try keeping a food diary along with your symptoms. That's what helped me the most, but it took a few years to work out that Christmas cake didn't agree with me:o.

If I make spag bol, for example, I'm fine if I cook it for three hours, and if I use creamed tomatoes rather than normal tinned. I can eat shallots, so I tend to use them rather than large onions. Luckily I seem to have gone off peppers...

I don't want to be rude - however, concerned that you feel the need to stock up with a years supply of loperamide. Try having a probiotic yogurt each day...that should sort you out.

Look, I dont mean to be rude either, but I didn't come to ask for medical advice. I came to ask for cheap sources of loperamide.
When I referred to 'a years supply' did I say how many tablets that may actually be? No, I didnt . My point was that the only place i know of that sells it cheap is a long drive from my home in a town I never need to visit. So in order to be MSE about this and save petrol by going there just to buy one box (often 6 capsules) of loperamide maybe three times a year, I JOKED hence the :rotfl:about buying a year's supply.
You dont know how many boxes I consider to be a year's supply. I really object to your further comment about 'bunging' myself up with loperamide, and getting to the cause of it. I KNOW the cause of it.
Please don't talk to me as if I'm an irresponsible imbecile.

My doctor is happy for me to use loperamide in the way that I do use it - so I'd appreciate it if you'd hold back on the medical advice.

To everyone else, thank you so much for the replies to the question that I asked.
I've actually found it - the same brand I used to use that Home Bargains sell - in my local chemist. The chemist is Lloyds and I think it was 69p for 12.

Right, I'm off to get a big glass of water and bung myself up with the stuff. ;)

I hardly think suggesting probiotic yougurt is medical advice :)

Would it not be more MSE for everyone here who has commented to ask their GP or gastroenterologist for a prescription?

Not for those of us who pay for their prescriptions! I could buy considerably more for £7.20 or whatever the current prescription charge is than my GP would ever prescribe on one script.

I am not sure to be honest why you are still posting on this thread. You made a superior comment based on the fact you obviously don't have a chronic bowel condition and don't understand what that entails, and are now trying to give the impression you weren't being snarky faced by irritation from those of us who do have one of these painful and embarrassing conditions and are managing them appropriately and in accordance with medical advice from qualified doctors.
