went to Asda at 3pm, too late as all food with short sell by dates had gone. BUT found one they had missed with sell by of 26th, (small lamb joint), so found a manager and he knocked 60% or so off. Asked him when I should have got there for bargains, and he said the FINAL markdowns were at 2pm but most of the stuff had gone by then.
Disgusted with sainsburys, they didnt knock much off at all at 2pm. Dont know if they went mad at 3.58pm!
So next year, try earlier: as previous poster says perhaps 1pm or even before?

My nearest ALDI did me proud.
They had reduced all the fruit and vegetables to just 20p a packet/item.
My trolley (a very big one) was only just big enough to carry it all - piled high it was, and contained ......

30 kgs potatoes (the more expensive large baking/jacket ones)
    2 kilos new/salad potatoes
    6 kgs standard onions
    1 kg large spanish onions
    1.5 kgs red onions
    1 kg leeks
    1 kg parsnips
    1 kg broccoli
    2 cauliflowers
    1 savoy cabbage
1.5 kgs sweet baby Chantenay carrots
    1 kg cherry "plum" Tomatoes
    1kg on-the-vine cherry tomatoes
    0.5 kg sugar snap peas
    2 kgs oranges
    2 kgs granny smiths
    1.5 kgs bananas
    2 Galia melons
    6 lemons
    3 limes

all for the princely sum of £8.60

That went well with my Asda bargains of
    1kg Mushrooms - 25p
10 sweet red peppers (long taper type) £1
    1kg brussel sprouts - 25p
    8 butter croissants - 18p
    3 Burgen Wholemeal & Cranberry loaves - 16p each
    2 Pints of milk - 8p a pint
    1 pint of single cream - 13p
