  • Ok understand that when you access a web page it goes through various protocols. If you aren't receiving the information, then something inbetween the web page and your browser must be blocking it... the steps are

    1) Browser sends data
    2) Router forwards data to you
    3) Your computer looks at data to see what application should use it
    4) any firewalls/virus scanners check the data to ensure its safe
    5) you see the data.

So first of all we're assuming the data is being sent. The ebay knows to send you data is that it receives a request to its IP Address. Your ISP takes https://www.ebay.com and translates that into an IP. That IP then goes to ebay. If your DNS Server at your ISP isn't working properly it won't change ebay to the IP. To check if this is the problem try typing http://66.135.208.97 and see what happens.

If that still doesnt work we can erase that problem.

Second is the router. Belkin have had known problems with blocking ebay and hotmail for unknown reasons! Its a weird unsolvable problem. So next we need to bypass the router. Try plugging the internet connection directly into your computer without the router. Then try again...

If not we can erase that.. so now it looks like its something on your machine. 4 things

    1) Windows Firewall
    2) Other Firewall
    3) Virus
    4) Spyware

It won't be windows firewall (unless your a kid and have parents who have purposly blocked those sites in the firewall options. If so you shouldn't access them behind their back :) )

    2) Other firewall. You mentioned you disabled Norton.. keep it disabled during this for testing purposes but also if you have anything else like ZoneAlarm fro example, disable that.

    3) Virus - Do a virus scan.. though more advice on this in 4...

    4) Spyware - This is a biggy and the most likely cause.. a lot of spyware takes domains and simply blocks access to them.. chances are if you google "Virus" and the name of the worm or whatever, it would be blocked too!!!!

What you need to do now is scan your computer using a program called HiJack this. If it is spyware, the google search will be blocked so i'll provide you with 2 links. The page that you can download it, and the direct download in case the worm has blocked the first:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

    And the direct download:
    http://files5.majorgeeks.com/files/142949df56ea8ae0be8b5306971900a4/spyware/hijackthis.zip

Once you've downloaded it you need to Scan and Save to Txt file. When you see the file, copy and paste EVERYTHING.. then post it in here. From that we may be able to find out exactly what it is and how to remove it.

One of those steps WILL fix the problem. Good luck :)

  • ok quick test, download or try another browser and see if you get the same problem

Also if you use a router and/or modem ,Unplugging the modem and router may do the trick
  • hmm why would another browser fix the problem? if its DNS its not browser related.. if its security its not browser related (as ebay and hotmail are trusted...) if its a spyware/virus then all browsers will be effected...

Another browser is only good for visual problems, or possible security problems through emails (phishing etc..)

The router unplugging was already recommended too ;) heh

Go into this directory and cut whatever is in there to your desktop: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
    restart your Internet Browser
If it helps, delete the file.
If it doesnt help, restore the file to its previous location

    Try the following;

    Re-register the following .dll files:

    Softpub.dll
    Wintrust.dll
    Initpki.dll
    Dssenh.dll
    Rsaenh.dll
    Gpkcsp.dll
    Sccbase.dll
    Slbcsp.dll
    Cryptdlg.dll

To re-register these files, follow these steps:

1.Click Start, and then click Run.

2.In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

3.At the command prompt, type the following lines and press ENTER after each line:

    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

4.Click OK when you receive the message that DllRegisterServer in FileName succeeded.

    5.Type exit.
