Can I use expired passport as ID?

My (UK) passport is due to run out next month and as I'm not planning on travelling and very skint I'm not planning to renew it until necessary. Pricey aren't they!

Thing is I use it right now for ID'ing myself for benefits, recruitment agencies and when I get a perm job I'll have to show it. I know I definitely can't travel with it, but is it still valid for ID purposes? As proof I can work here etc, as it says I'm UK-born and that isn't something that goes out of date?

I don't drive so my passport is the only thing I have with my photo, name, date & place of birth etc on it. (I was 20 when I got the passport, 30 now, so I don't think I've changed noticeably since the passport photo.)
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

depends on who's wanting it... for bars n clubs it should be fine, but with some agencies it may b a problem...

Airlines accept them up to two years out of date as ID for internal flights.

On what do you base this sweeping statement?

There is no legal obligation to have a passport (unless you want to travel abroad), driving licence (unless you want to drive) or ID card (abolished thank God) in the UK.

Are you saying that anybody who doesn't is unemployable?

Many companies want proof that you have the right to work in the UK, passport is one of the pieces you can use as evidence.
One train company did this to my cousin recently. Born and bred in Bristol, family from Bristol (and have been for the past 150 years) and worked for company for 8 years but due to some "problems" with employing people with fake identities she had to go an prove her right to work in the UK
It is also on the list of things that can be used as evidence along with a driving license for enhanced CRB checks for working with vulnerable adults and young children.

It is a legal requirement for an employer to see proof that an employee is entitled to work in the UK. If you are using a passport for this then it has to be valid. If the company are caught not checking, they will be fined.

I recently had to get a copy of an updated passport for a staff member as the one originally sent in to head office for PIW was expired, whatever you use for PIW as far as i'm aware has to be valid and not expired.

I guess it depends how anal the company is/the rules are.

An expired passport doesn't mean you no longer become a citizen so should in theory be ok - as long as the photo still looks like you.

The only other document I have is my birth certificate - would that be ok if the old passport isn't?

If it's your full (long) birth certificate yes, do you have a national insurance card?
