Because in the market economy prices bear very little relation to the сost price and are driven by the demand and supply in the first place.

Roaming prices aren't set by supply and demand, they're set to con the gullible who don't realise what the costs really are. Do you really think there's a "demand" for watching Coronation Street abroad and paying £20,000 for it? (as I think someone was charged).

It's like endowments, PPI etc. Rip-off the gullible who don't understand the product/don't read the T&Cs etc.

As I said above, if they are not set by supply and demand, then change the system to make sure that they are instead of setting the prices.

If someone wanted to watch it on the mobile abroad then clearly there was a demand.

Nanny state with brainless or mentally disabled citizens springs to mind.

More information about how roaming competition will work is contained in paragraphs 18, 22, 23, 24 and Article 5 of "Proposal for a REGULATION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on roaming on public mobile communications networks within the Union".

Hopefully paragraph 57 will reduce the large numbers of people who come to this forum complaining about their data roaming bills, having had data roaming activated by default and therefore not having researched the charges involved before using the service.

There is a lot in the news today about the re-introduction of competition in the EU roaming market discussed above. The following article suggests that Apple and Google will take advantage of this and introduce their own roaming packages, particularly for data roaming.

The BBC have also published video footage of the discussions in the European Parliament today.
