  • I could live without a lot of things I suppose....dishwasher, a computer etc.... but they are nice to have. I suppose you can use computer/internet at library if you have access to one.

My essential after running water is heating. Due to medical conditions I would be in a lot of pain in the cold. I dread the day my gas boiler packs up, its 20 years old now but still going strong

  • I love me freezer, so many things can be kept for so much longer.
My current home had central heating when we moved and it's amazing! No more coal dust getting tracked in, and hot water/heating by turning a dial and what seems like minutes (at least for the heating side of things).
I'd miss it if I had to give it up, but I'd really hate to give up the freezer.

  • many of the above, esp computer, washing machine and fridge/freezer.

    Plus
    - central heating & electric blanket (having lived in a 4 stoery Victorian house with only one paraffin oil heater during the 1960's, I now love the luxury of heat)
-electric lawn mower - just couldn't be bothered with one of those push-along things although it's good exercise !
    -microwave
-DAB radio: I've always loved listening to the radio. I could manage without a telly but would be miserable without a radio.

Heating, washing machine, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, slow cooker in that order.

Was without heating for a month in a very very cold February, the heating was bad enough but the lack of hot water was a royal pain in the neck. Constantly heating water is so time consuming and the stuff is reallly heavy.

My cast iron pans and Dutch Oven (modern made but very *traditional* so are they OS?) Computers (I'm very much a technology geek lol) Food Processor, Blender, Bread Maker, Electric Coffee Percolator, washer, couldn't live without any of those - I don't use a Slow Cooker, I use a Haybox and a Thermal Cooker (Magic Cooker)

I'm very modern with appliances and technology but am OS in cooking - cook from scratch, make things etc. I'm a combination of both worlds OS and ultra modern but would no way like to go back to the olden days, would miss all my gadgets and technology. They help me so much.

A previous poster said running water and I second that. After living in India and relying on well water (which became difficult to access due to the amount of new wells being sunk and the water table dropping) and then having to buy water in and have it delivered and sometimes having to wait 4 days for it, it is indeed a gift to cheerish. Also being able to heat the water at the touch of a button, I was reliant on solar power for the heating of water but during monsoon, that was another story but you soon adjust to a cold shower and you soon get use to using a bucket and jug to wash your hair (I have long hair) and shower and then use the remainder to wash your smalls in!

And central heating, I have put the heating on for a couple of hours last night to 'air' as I have washing hung about to dry and I have enjoyed the warmth.

Central heating and constant hot water
Computer, washing machine, electric kettle, mobile phone

Years back when I was a single mum we survived heating the house with a coal fire and using an immersion heater for the hot water - it was so very expensive .....

I love my internet access, mobile and very fast electric kettle (when I was at home with parents we had to put a kettle on the gas cooker to boil it)

I can live without a dishwasher (ours broke a few years back and we never replaced it)
  • Running water and waste water management. The ability to flush a loo is so important to public health.

A fuel supply. We live in a modern house with no chimneys and no chance of adding one at a later date, so gas and electricity are vital.

Oh and a safe place to live. Not something everyone has access to, even in the UK.

I have to say not only a computer but internet access I constantly use it for research, checking facts, spellings, keeping up with family and friends, work for OH etc.

Washing machine, fridge/freezers, vacuum, mobile phone (can call for help, take photos, listen to music, use maps etc) modern medical gadgets (5 second blood glucometer - literally difficult to be a diabetic and not have one!)

Everything else is nice (slow cookers, hand blenders, food processor, tv) and I wouldn't want to be completely without but not strictly essential for me.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

My car. I'd be more or less housebound without one and this would have a huge effect on my ability to function as a useful housewife and mother, not to mention my own social life and mental health.

House gadgets? The washing machine and the internet. I could manage without the rest though I'd miss the fridge/freezer, the microwave and the dishwasher! If there was no water and power though I would think I'd have more things to worry about than washing clothes and surfing ebay, I'd be sharpening up the kitchen knives and waiting for the zombies to arrive. ;)
