Becles wrote:Many have a timer, so you can put the ingredients in before you go to bed, then wake up to fresh bread. You need to take care and put the water in the bottom, then the dry ingredients and the yeast on the top though. If the yeast gets wet it'll start working before the mixing starts which will ruin the bread..
Thank you so much Becles you have just made me realise why our bread sometimes goes wrong!! We often set the timer overnight for fresh bread in the morning it is such a great smell to wake up to and a couole of times it has been wierd now I know why!!0 -

On my kitchen worksurfaces
Morphy Richards Breadmaker (used daily)
Gaggia Espresso maker (used daily)
Gaggia Gelataria Ice Cream Maker (used almost weekly)
Magimix 5100 Food Processor (used most days, even just to chop onions & garlic)
And a portable TV
And it's not a huge kitchen ... Lots of space is actually not used in most kitchens. Look at corners & places where you have other "stuff" to make room for appliances. Unless you're going for that (currently) trendy minimalist look. My "look" is a timewarped county kitchen one, complete with Aga, wellies and tomato seedlings!
I love the sound of your kitchen. Sounds really welcoming and somewhere I would feel at home in. I am not the tidiest of people as my husband puts it and I get a bit scared if I walk into a pristine sparkling kitchen with nothing on the surfaces and no sign of life!!0 -
It's quite interesting to see which of us has a kitchen full of gadgets.
I have:
3 slow cookers of varying sizes - used constantly at the moment (although small one will go back to mum)
3 tier electric steamer - used regularly
Jack LaLanne juicer - used fairly regularly
George Foreman - used regularly
Kenwood Chef - occasionally
Breadmaker - occasionally
Kenwood chefette (with stand & bowl) - in garage
Stick blender - used most days
Combi micro/oven/grill - daily
toaster/kettle - daily
Electric Frypan (handle broken and in garage) - used to used in caravan
Then there are the hand operated gadgets - let's not go there!0 -
ooohhh only just noticed this thread......right time to confess!!! well as you know im new to this cooking lark but my lovely hubby is addicted to it and loves his kitchen appliances!!! he's worse than me in a shoe shop if you let him anywhere near a kitchen appliance shop.hes eying up an electric wok at the moment
he's also a sod for various pots and pans, his favourites being those 'spot' pans and his beloved anthony worrall thompson pans set.
we have as well as the obvious like microwave etc.
large george forman grill.
deep fat fryer.
slow cooker.
breadmaker.
blender/mixer/other thing!
steamer.
and just about everything else you could have!!! slow cooker lives on top of fridge freezer and is on worktop whilst in use, deep fat fryer on top of surface, breadmaker on top of surface(although it was meant to be stored away that was impractical as we use it ever other day if not everyday)george forman grill on top of cupboard in its box, steamer on top of cupboard, blender on top of cupboard in box.........the breadmaker is used at least every other day, sometimes more and slow cooker probably 2/3 times a week.deep fat fryer at least once a week and george foreman grill is used quite often.blender used again to varying degrees-will be lots soon as bump due on 08/04/05 so eaning in 5 or so months will wear it out!!
we have a sandwich toaster in the cupboard which is used to varying degrees, every so often we go through a 'thing' for toasted sandwiches and use it lots....but then it spends months on end at the back of the cupboard,as someone else said though its an absolute pain to clean.
we dont really eat a lot of deserts etc so no popcorn, ice cream etc makers though......thank god!!! the kitchen is too crowded though i think and i really cant see where on earth we would put anything else.0 -
Found it
INGREDIENTS:
450ml whisky
1 400g can evaporated milk
1 400g can condensed milk
1 tsp instant coffee
½ tsp vanilla extract
Superb, I have whisky in the cupboard that appeared from somewhere and I don't drink. I even have condensed milk (so good with espresso) so only evaporated milk to buy, not that's quite MSE compared to a bottle of baileys so I think I can stretch to it.
Cheers.0 -
Thats brilliant, thanks Fazer. We sometimes get given whisky but my husband only drinks Jamiesons, so hopefully I could use it in this recipe and it will taste ok. I use my breadmaker every day and our sandwich toaster about once a week.
The sandwich toaster is great for low fat sandwiches as you dont need any margarine, you can make low fat pasties by putting the ingredients into bread instead of pastry.Use up leftovers that way.I got mine for 50p on a boot fair stall.
We have a pasta maker that gets used about once a month too.Its really just a mini mangle you roll out the pasta with but can cut thin and thick ribbons of pasta too. You see a lot of these on ebay as people cant get the hang of the dough but its really easy if you have a food processor. I use 7 and 1/2 oz bread flour and one egg and mix it around till its a ball.If its sticky add more flour if its dry add a teaspoon of water.0 -
These are the gadgets I have – I haven’t actually bought any of them, they were all given to me:
Breadmaker (Gran-in-law bought but never used it) – used about twice a week
2 Toastie machines (wedding presents) – One of them used once a week other one sat waiting to be used when the other one is binned. The one we use at the moment is one that seals the edges and is a pain to clean (it must be one of the cheapest ones – grease from the cheese has got behind the plates and smells rancid when it gets hot  ). I don’t like using it but the other one does not seal the edges so Mr Pennywise does not use it – that one looks much easier to clean.
Anthony Worrell Thompson hand blender (wedding present) – I like this as it has different attachments - a stick blender, mini food processor & whisk - used pretty much every day.
Food processor/juicer (my mum got a new one & I got the old one) - don’t use this at the moment. It got put in a box when we remodelled the kitchen (last August) and we have never bothered to get it out again.Your home is at risk if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other loan secured on it.0 -
How long does breadmaker bread stay fresh for? I am interested in getting one but don't want to be having to use it every day!'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0
