Excel Read Only

I have an excel file that I'm trying to save to a CD-RW disc, but every time I do so it saves it as a Read Only file, even when I've unchecked the Read Only box in the properties tab.

You would have to save the file to the hard disk with your changes and re-burn it i think as a cd-rw doesn't work like a hard disk.

I guess that it's related to what "R" means. I wouldn't imagine it means that you can just save the file if you make changes.

There is nothing wrong with what you have, I'm afraid. CDRW will not allow you to edit a file on the disc.

The idea is that you STORE the file on the CDRW. Open as required, save to HDD and burn it back to the CDRW.

    Thanks guys.
Seems rather a convuluted way - I'd assumed a CD-RW disc worked the same way as a hard disc, but at least I can save any changes now.

Are there any types of disc that I can just save files to with any changes?

Unfortunately not with my laptop! :D
  • I think it might work if you format the CD for Packet writing, using something like InCD.
  • be easier to use a memory stick

I'd get a USB Pendrive as well, they are cheap as anything these days.

You even see 1GB ones nowadays for £15.

A 256 or 512 mB one should only cost you around a tenner. Use that for day to day stuff and just keep a weekly / monthly backup on CDRW's if the data is important.
