Thank you everyone for your words of wisdom!

I figure I've got to see if its the job for me, my friend has spoken to the midwife the surgery he works in and she will happily chat to me and take me out with her, has given me her mobile number and apparently she's lovely :)

So, from an idea to a kinda scary reality.... finding out about it anyway.

Hardest thing right now, sounds silly I know, is how to tell my parents?! They're always lovely and suportive about everything, its just such a random and out of the blue thing. I've been thinking about it for quite some time but it'll be a surprise to them, and different to anything I've ever talked about. I'm worried that they'll think its a spur of the moment decision, rashly made etc, but that's only cos that's worrying me deep down too

I was thinking yesterday (whilst lying in bed all day feeling very ill :() that it'll be another 12 months before I have to make an application for a course or anything like that... so there's no hurry to make a decision. Can't hurt to find out about it hey, at least then I won't look back and wish I had.

  • Hi kath.

Hey don't worry about telling your parents. As you say, they are lovely & supporting so they will be pleased that you are getting a feel for some direction.

I'm not suggesting you have to "sell" the idea to them but if you present it in a positive way i.e. telling them about the potential visits with the midwife so you can get an idea, tell them about any research you have done already & also that you have 12 months to continue researching so that you are sure, then they will see that you are serious and not jumping in feet first.

Don't worry....they will be pleased for you I am sure!

    Hugs.

  • I remember being told that if an idea returns 3 times to you then do it, you are being told something. This has worked for me, so good luck!

    Kath

Congrats to you for a year in, and what a journey for you. An achievement in its own right, so make sure you remember that. :D

I have worked in the sharp end of childbirth when I worked in Child Protection Social work. Happy to chat over MSN if you want some info from me about my experiences. I dont know much obvioulsy about the technicalities of the job though, but know a fair amount about the legal frameworks and pressures etc . Dont chat to me too long or heavens I might put you off!( hopefully not :D )

I completely agree with an earlier poster who was talking about getting experience. I believe competitiion for midwifery places is hard, so the more experience you have the better. I know of a few people who had never done social work before, and collapsed and dumped the job shortyl after qualification, much less cuddly than many thought. Forewarned is forarmed as they say, and taking vol work ( or even paid if you can find it) will help you to make a good decision about how to proceed. It might be worth finding out if your local hospital needs domestics or ward assistance for extra quids. helps to familiarise yourself with the national health service, which in itself is a culture you can accept or you cant. Working there will help you decide one way or the other.

NCT, gingerbread, or even helping out at a playgroup, have a good dig about and find something, anything, to help you gain experience and start off on your journey.

All the best with it, and do give me a shout if you want anything :)

    Thanks everyone - again! :)

LA - you're right of course, they will be supportive, I just need to tell them in a kinda 'its not a big thing but I am serious and I have thought about it but there's time to consider it more' type way  :rotfl:

Smilermonkey - that is a lovely saying, I will remember that!

Lynz - thank you for the offer, I might just take you up on it at some point! Its a balancing act between wanting to be properly informed but not only hearing the negative and being put off! Any profession has its downsides and its naive to think otherwise, I just want to find out the positives too!

I'm hoping that this midwife I've got the number for will be a really good contact, to chat to and hopefully she might have ideas of experience I can get. This job I've got is not full time but it is 5 days a week so its going to be tricky fitting in visiting her/open day at the uni etc, but I'll find a way if its important to me!
