Photome,
How far would you go for a good flight deal? I think from your avatar we both hail from the fine city of Norwich ( or thereabouts). I always cost flights from all London airports, check E Midlands (Norwich KLM not really competitive for most routes), Luton. Almost invariably the best deals are from London (inc Stansted) because there's more population, more carriers operating and more competition. If I'm saving eg £100 per flight with a family of five, petrol and parking is easily worth it and I have a much greater chance of when and where I can travel. So it seems worth the extra drive to me. I don't think there's an airport nearer than Heathrow or Gatwick (+ - 3 hrs) with the same wide range of options is there? Once I've got to get in the car and drive any distance to park at an airport the only difference really is time and petrol.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -

Also my closest airport (Manchester) doesn't have ryanair or easyjet, so I have to travel to an alternative airport if I want to take advantage of those flights anyway.
Hi Daisy, not sure if I've misunderstood your post and you're saying no easyjet flights from Manchester to specific destinations, but just in case you mean no easyjet at all, they do fly from Manchester and in the summer have quite an extensive network. (No flights to Italy though last time I looked).
Ryanair do fly out of MAN too, but only to Dublin, as far as I know.0 -
Hi Dawning, no you haven't misunderstood my post, it's just that I expected you to be a mind reader!
If I go abroad it is generally to visit friends in Bodrum - and although easyjet flies to Bodrum, it doesn't fly from manchester, so I have to travel to another airport (generally gatwick) if I wish to use easyjet (which I do sometimes as I have to carry medical equipment, so the bigger handluggage allowance suits me)I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
For your information, zzzLazyDaisy, easyJet and Ryanair both have quite a few destinations from Manchester. Ryanair recently went, but now are back and easyJet have slowly been building their network up over the last few years..

Yes I am in Norwich
If I am flying to the USA, (I am in Aug) then I will fly from anywhere..this time around it happens to be BA from Heathrow.
If I am only going away for a weekend, which is when I use the low cost carriers, then I wont travel to Hrow or Gatwick, and generally speaking will only go as far as Stansted, so that rules out any cheap BA flights.
ps
The cheapest flight I have ever had to the US was from Norwich via amsterdam to LA about 3 years ago, not been able to find a cheap flight from Norwich since though0 -
Hi Photome,
Pretty much the same for me. Have once done a weeked to Amsterdam from Norwich (convinced myself the petrol and parking for Stansted cost more than the airfare plus taxi to Norwich airport) but usually for anything over a week it's best option out of Stansted/Heathrow/Gatwick. Probably wouldn't do H'row or Gatwick for a weekend unless I could build in an extra day in London visiting friends or doing something else. It's always a balance of cost v time v convenience.
We tried Norwich to USA(Atlanta) via Amsterdam once, which turned out about the same price as going from H'row. Unfortunately, it just happened to be the day of the terrorist threat to bring down transatlantic flights. Absolute chaos, and a painful reminder that small airports are terrific when nothing much is happening but they don't cope well with pressure! We had flights cancelled, rebooked, changed, ended up running through Schipol airport with three kids to make a connection 20 mins after landing (flight had to reopen for us which made us very popular), got rerouted and arrived in minneapolis...only our luggage didn't! Had to battle to get onward flights and arrived frazzled and exhausted late at night in a strange city (in more ways than one) which we had to navigate in the dark, rather than early afternoon when we'd have been able to see the landmarks we'd been given to follow. The funny thing was that the friend we were visiting worked for CNN and earlier that day had been sent to London...to cover the terrorist threat to transatlantic flights so we probably crossed in mid-Atlantic!!! I wouldn't blame Norwich airport for that day but haven't felt tempted to repeat the experience of flying from there long haul!Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
just booked via lowcost flight only for faro in sept, same flight but £80 cheaper, no admin charges, happy daysHi All
I am planning to go to Italy in September and so did a quick search online to see the charges.
For 2 people i got £230 quote to fly with Ryanair, I was wondering if anyone knew if there is way to reduce this or if it simply is a case of that being cheapest possible price?0 -

Not Ryanair. If they have booked you a Ryanair flight £80 cheaper than Ryanair then they have just lost £80.0
