Truecrypt is a software solution for encrypting drives, quite popular with decent encryption algorithms (Twofish, AES, Serpent) but does have some weaknesses that can be exploited. Ironkey manufactures USB drives that contain many security features: https://www.ironkey.com/enterprise and https://www.ironkey.com/demo-basic

    thank you

is ironkey the one that has the pin on the actual drive?

or do i not need to bother with that and just get something like truecrypt?

im not expecting any worldfamous hackers to get hold of it, neither is the date that high risk.....just personal stuff that i wudnt want people liek family and freinds getting hold of!!

I like http://www.rohos.com/products/rohos-mini-drive/ for security on USB sticks used on Windows machines. Fully portable with no requirements on the host machine.

However my favourite, Java based, for full cross-platform compatibility (e.g. if you have a Linux netbook) is http://ppgp.sourceforge.net/

I have an entire operating system and contents on a pen drive (Linux Ubuntu) so I can plug it into any computer and boot up if I choose, very handy. :D

    I do this also.
Typically I use a 4GB usb and partition is to be 1GB and 3GB putting the operating system image on the 1GB. I can use the 3GB for data maybe when I am running a PC from the 1GB, or independently.
I use pgp to encrypt files as necessary. Countries where encryption is illegal are France, Iran, Iraq. It is illegal to export pgp (technology) from USA or Canada. (I only have limited knowledge you will need to check with experts.)
pgp type of encryption was I think invented independently in UK security services and also in worldwide public developers space (free software), so it 'escaped' into public use......
