02 Online Contract Help Wanted!!

I need some advice on how to persuade 02 to lower my monthly line rental.

I signed up to an 02 18-month online contract on 4 October 2005 and am currently on their lowest tariff (£25 per month) as advertised on their website. Once the 18 months are up, I don't want to renew the contract.

After Christmas I will be travelling Europe for 3 months and will NOT be using my mobile whilst abroad. As the remainder of the contract runs whilst I'm away, I'll be paying 02 £25 per month for the privilege of an unused phone.

I have thought about ending the contract early but not only would I have to stump up the £100+ line rental, I'd probably have to pay an admin charge too.

Is there a cheeky way I can speak to the 02 Retentions Dept and tell them I want to end my contract early to go with another provider (with an example of their cheapest tariff) and see if that prompts them to drop my line rental for the remainder of the contract (not mentioning, of course, that I won't be renewing the contract afterwards)?

Any tips or advice gratefully received!

There are a few O2 members of staff that come on from time to time, hopefully they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Rather than try to end the contract, why not ask to defer your contract whilst you are away so that your contract is extended for 3 months, showing that you have loyalty to the brand. Thus giving them more reason to help you rather than make up a reason to cancel and them having no reason to be on your side.
  • I called T-Mobile before I moved abroad for 4 months and they gave me a £3 per month contract for 4 months, and then 4 months tacked on the end at the usual £25 per month - was only back in the UK for 4 months so that suited me perfectly - so maybe O2 do something similar? Merry Christmas!
