Changing o2 Tariff

It appears that I can change from my iPhone 30 tariff (100 mins, unlimited texts and data) @ £30.64 per month to O2 100 (100 mins, 500 texts and 500mb data inc tethering) @ £26.50 per month.

The tethering is more use to me than unlimited texts so it would seem to be a good move, and save me some money :)

Can someone confirm that I can change tariff without altering the overall length of my contract? I signed up for an 18 month deal and want to be sure changing tariff won't mean I have to stick around for another 18 months (I'm about 12 months in).

Current contracts allow downgrading to the next lower tariff after 9 month.

AFAIK, older contracts allowed more downgradings, but the first one switches you to a newer contract, so you can downgrade two times in total.

Downgrading doesn't result in the contract extension.

    Good stuff, thanks.
  • Quick follow up question.
I can now downgrade...but when I signed the contract initially 12 months ago I was able to downgrade now as much as I liked...not just two steps which I'm now being offered. The two steps is perfect incidentally but I don't like it when contracts are changed down the line in favour of the operator. I am pretty annoyed is that o2 won't let me downgrade my package as it stands (ie minutes, texts and data) They will downgrade the mins & texts but the data has to be bolted on...

Upshot of all of this...I'm currently on a £45 p/month contract. When I signed I knew I had the option of going to a £36 p/month contract 12months later. Now the 12months is up and o2 have gone to these new rules...to keep my mins, texts & data will cost me...£46 p/month - so that's NOT A DOWNGRADE is it?!?!

Do I have any leg to stand on to stamp my foot and insist that this is unfair and I should be entitled to pay less a year on as they have broken the original contract I signed? This all comes into play now as part of the 18 month plan was to go to this downgraded package a year on to make my iPhone cheaper...and it isn't :(

You have no leg to stand on as its YOU who wish to change the tariff and you can only change to an existing tariff, not one which was discontinued a while ago.

Of course there is no harm in asking. But if you do, I wouldn't go around claiming they have broken the contract and are being unfair. Because you'll be relying on a generous goodwill gesture.
