Get yourself ready for even more troublesome rules when the UK leaves the EU.

But in the meantime, what's the sweat about a UK mobile? Just get a UK PAYG SIM card. You can probably even order it from Amazon for home delivery. Make a call with that SIM now and then so it doesn't expire.

NOW we had a message from the bank, having made a payment this morning, telling us we can no longer use a French mobile and have to have a UK registered mobile instead.

As we are permanently resident in France, this is neither possible nor desirable, so leaves us unable to use this facility any more. I think the telephone banking number (slow and cumbersome in any case) is an 0800 number we can't dial from France anyway.

You have two options - either change account to a bank which does not use telephone/mobiles to authenticate customers requests. This list includes HSBC, First Direct, M&S, Nationwide,Barclays and Natwest.

Otherwise, as has been suggested get hold of a free UK sim card and use that in your phone when needing to make an OTP transaction. If going down this route, I recommend a 3 PAYG SIM (available free from here- just ask someone to forward it to you in France). It has the added benefit that you can use their Feel at Home service from France if its useful to you.

I believe Santander's main telephone banking number is 08459 724 724 - the 0800 is for applications according to their website. However,if it is an 0800 number, you can make calls to these for free via Skype.

I'm also currently overseas and use these various methods to bank with different institutions.

    Regards
    Sunil

All banks have normal landline numbers that can be called from abroad (and from within the UK). They are usually printed at the back of your debit card, and can also be found on saynoto0870.com.

if you’re on Pay As You Go you'll need to convert your Pay As You Go credit into an Add-on to get an allowance.
AFAIK all 'add-on allowances' last for just one month.

I don't see what all this fuss is about as it's free to receive texts abroad with any UK sim. The only trouble is to keep the sim alive as most require a chargeable call or text every 6 months (2-3 months for some). IMO giffgaff sim is best for this as for it incoming texts count.

    Absolute Nonsense.

You waited 2 years to say that? (In case you don't get it, the post prior to yours is 2 years old)

OTP has been designed by an idiot. To update your mobile number the system texts your old mobile number with the confirmation. Where's the logic in that?
If someone manages to login as me and change the mobile number, I'd like to know that it was changed so I can report the fraud. That's the logic. Email is insecure, they shouldn't use it for authentication.
