In terms of programmable remotes handling the volume, it may not work out as planned, as the TV/amp's volume control is generally only a +/- increment rather than an absolute level setting.
I can pretty much guarantee you that the remote's idea of what the volume is and the TV's will get out of step at some point.
An alternative, if you use a separate amp, would be to get an attenuating cable that reduces the audio signal.0 -
