Being 'evicted' - Housing Association

Hi all,
My hubby and I are housing association tenants, we have a one bedroom flat in a building with 3 other flats/sets of tenants in it.
Yesterday, we all received letters from the HA telling us that they have agreed to sell our building and 2 next door on one side, to the YMCA and that the YMCA needed 'vacant possession' of our properties and that the HA would relocate us.
None of us want to move. The couple next door have lived there for 16 years, they have a house and have done a lot of work to the interior. The lady of the house has been crying all night and day.
In this building, we have just had the back garden done up (had to fight with the HA to get it done, they had been charging for 'landscaping' that was never done for years. It went as high as it could go in process and they had to pay us all compensation and do up the garden which has changed from a wasteland to a lovely space which we all use and enjoy), we all get on well and none of us wants the upheaval of moving to what will probably be less desirable properties in less desirable areas (this is one of the good areas).
We're seeking advice from CAB etc. The letter the HA hand-delivered yesterday sprung this on us all completely out of the blue and was very unprofessional, giving us no time scale and telling us all to contact some woman but not giving us any phone number/email address etc!
We've been here variously: 13 yrs, 16 yrs, 6 years, etc. and have been good tenants who look after the building and all get on well.
Any comments or advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated!

Have a meeting altogether and discuss whether you want to fight it totally or whether you want to fight for a decent move...
Go and see your MP - altogether.
I know someone who got moved from a council place and got the minimum £4k payout PLUS thousands for the additional stuff they'd put in to the property.0 -
Assuming you all have Assured Tenancies then the Housing Association is going to have a rough time unless they can 'entice' you all away, meaning they will need to make you a really good offer i.e. nice flat, nice area, nice neighbours - good luck0

Thanks for the quick replies guys.
Letter states that we can 'apply for' homeless payment of £4,700.00 per tenancy and we will also be payed 'disturbance allowance' to cover cost of moving.
We are all meeting at the mo and most of us don't want to go.
Just found my hubby's contract from when he moved in and it's an 'assured weekly tenancy' so I'm looking into all that now.
Will post what happens.*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

So you're not being evicted then?I am not a cat (But my friend is)0

So you're not being evicted then?
And your point is?
Eviction = removal. 'Eviction' written as shown in first place to emphasise that it is not because of any wrongdoing on our part so not that sort of eviction!*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

Can you check if it as assured tenancy or an assured shorthold tenancy.likelyfran wrote: »Just found my hubby's contract from when he moved in and it's an 'assured weekly tenancy' so I'm looking into all that now.

There's always more than one!
OP want to stay where they are, and there's immediate advice on getting compo. Some people would sell their souls!
(Yes, I know compo will come up if the move is forced, but that wasn't the question.)0 -
I don`t know about where you are but social housing here in SE (council or housing association) is not a guarenteed lifelong housing when your given a placement. They can up and move you when they wish too here and it does happen quite a lot. Only good point is you will be re housed, BUT
I can imagine it being awful especially after a long time of being there, setting up a home and having a fab neighbourhood to go with it
It would be nice to move you ALL together if they could but still not a nice thing to have happen.
Fingers crossed you can get something sorted out. Let us know how you get on with it all.DebtFree FEB 2010!Slight blip in 2013 - Debtfree Aug 2014 :j

Hi poppy, the wording specifies that the tenancy is 'assured weekly and NOT assured shorthold as specified by Housing Act 1988'. Whatever that means!*Look for advice, not 'advise'*
