New service provider didn't inform bt service ended

Hi,

In January I moved out of my flat and contacted bt to ask for a MAC code for the people who were moving in to use, using the fact that BT had increased the line rental to end my contract prematurely. In the email BT sent they stated that I didn't need to contact them as the new provider would. I gave this to the new tenants, and they informed me they had changed to the new provider within a month.

However I kept receiving bills, and eventually a phone call from BT and I let them know about this and after that received no further communication. However I have now received a bill of 175.78 forwarded from my old address and a request to pay it or the case will be handed over to a debt collection agency.

I phoned BT and they informed me that they hadn't received anything from the new provider about the service being ended, and that they were sorry but I would have to pay the full bill.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Alex

Why did you request a MAC and give this to the new tenants to use. This is not what a MAC is used for. A MAC allows you to easily transfer your broadband to another provider on your line. This is nothing to do with the new tenants, who should have started their own contract with BT. You either request a MAC or cancel your contract - not both, so your mistake therefore you pay for it.
