Help.. i am starting a IVA very soon and need to find..

a new bank account but i need to find one that does direct debits and standing orders.

I dont want an overdraft or cheque book but a debit card would be preferable, does any one know which one is the best for people with bad credit ?

Hi thanks blues i have debt with the co-op bank, and barclays so dont think i can go with them,or can i?
  • Hi there,

    We've just done that!

Tried Barclays first and they wanted both me and hubby to sit with them for 2 hours!! Obviously to try to sell us all sorts of insurances and savings accounts! Dunno 'bout you but to find 2 hours together without any kids just to listen to someone giving us the 'hard sell' was not really an option for us.

Then tried Natwest - who I will say is NOT the 'helpful bank'. Tried applying online then chasing paperwork with a phone call. They couldn't talk to me on the phone because I didn't have an account yet!!

Finally we called the cooperative.... they've been brilliant!!! All we had to do was go in branch to sign a joint mandate (only because we wanted a joint account, you wouldn't have to for a single). We had our account numbers within 4 days!! Best of all when you phone them you get straight through to an actual person!!

Sorry for the long winded reply!!

    Jo. ;)

ps. Natwest paperwork arrived about a week after sorting it with co op!

If you aren't too far behind with payments your record won't look too bad at the moment. We opened accounts with co-op (not for you) and Natwest. Co-Op, as above, was far quicker, but Nat west came through.

thanks for the replies i have applied to natwest and said answer will be in the post do you think i would be able to apply for the co-op even though i had a loan with them 9 years ago and been paying via dmp(iva is the way as this debt is gonna go on for 11 years) or not?

If you are currently in an arrangement with Co-Op they are unlikely to give you an account, I'm afraid. But, your credit record will be shot anyway, so there is no harm in trying. There is, however, a good chance that they will close it when they realise the circumstances ( has happened before!)

Have a look at the Yorkshire Building Society website. They do an e-account that I think has limited SO and DD facilities.

    Hi
My husband got one with Yorkshire Bank, Ready cash account. It hasn't got an overdraft facility but came with a debit card, and he is able to pay DD's out of it. He was in with the manager for 15 minutes tops.
  • I've an IVA and i got a Nationwide flexaccount, with DDs/SOs, and a debit card.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

NatWest do one with a debit card and you can do direct debits. HTH.
