If they e-mail again you could mention that when they take you to court, you will be happy to hear them try to explain why they took the laptop apart and then tried to claim a refund.
Would he have done this with something from Comet, Dixons etc?

The fact that he has taken it apart means that he has accepted ownership of it.

    Sale of goods act.

Correct, as majority of scammers will open your laptop remove the HDD, memory and processor and report that laptop is faulty, the same I have seen in shops like Comet, Dixons, Tesco

If they are doing a charge back via a credit card company or a visa debit card then it can take way longer than 72 hours.

I did a charge back on a visa debit card once, took me two weeks had to go into my bank and fill out a form yadda yadda yadda.

I think they meant they would start the credit card charge back after 72 hours. I asked for the evidence they have, but still no reply and no cc charge back....no sure if i will hear from them again or not...after all it did take them a month after the dispute closed to threaten me again!
    hmmmm......

Just keep all messages & receipt for postage safe. I don't know whether it will help if they do but can't do any harm.

Just make sure you transfer all your funds from your paypal acount to your bank account otherwise paypal can do whatever they want with your money. If they do chargeback then cancel your payment agreements and let paypal suck it up and worst case scenario just open another paypal account but dont leave yourself open to being on the losing end of a paypal scam.

Firstly can I please warn regulars this is an old thread!

qaz, reading the posts you have made you don't appear to have a working knowledge of paypal or ebay, I wonder if perhaps you have either not used them for quite a while or maybe you are in a different country where the ebay rules are different?

If you read some of the sticky threads and some of the posts made by others you may find some useful information.
