CPU fan speed - should I be worried?

  • Download Prime 95 and put your pc under a torture test at 100% load. Then check the temps
Great bit of software, definitely worth knowing about. It hasn't been running long enough yet but I think I understand my problem a bit better now:

The fan temp has gone up to 3440rpm so it's good to know that its still capable of going faster than it was yesterday. CPU temp right now is 52 C with prime95 running, I'd imagine that's okay as I've seen it go up to 57-58 C when I'm running a few different apps. I would guess the fan was slow before as I'd just switched the pc on, and I hadn't had the msi corecentre warning before because 1) my pc very rarely gets a cold reboot and 2) it's in the coldest room in the house, an attic conversion/study, and it's freezing outside

I was totally expecting it to pack up just because the shops close for a few days, sods law and all that, but panic over - thanks guys!

(BTW the cpu is AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester 90nm socket 939, and the motherboard is MSI K8N Neo2-54G Platinum)

For Core 2 Duo's and Athlon 64's, use Core Temp (or Intel TAT) to measure the temperatures. It's able to read the values from the core, rather than from the sensors on the motherboard. Just gives a much more accurate reading.

Also instead of using MSI Core Centre, Speedfan is worth a look. It's a free, very handy application.

And Orthos is a more modern use of Prime 95. Better GUI etc...

The rpm speeds you mention seem fine although you're temps seem slightly high for an Athlon 64. Nothing to be concerned about, but if you did want to improve it maybe (if you're using the stock cooler) look at an aftermarket solution.

The Thermalalright XP-90 is one of the better and more affordable solutions. You'd also need to buy some thermal paste (Artic Silver 5) and fan (one of the silent 90mm type). Probably cost you around £25-30 (inc P&P). So not a necessity.
