jockettuk wrote:sorry cant agree.. ive known loads to have had them done at clairs including my daughter and cant fault the cleanliness etc and as for the gun they do both ears at once and never have i seen or heard of anyone who has had there ears ripped or tore as you have said.. not saying it doesnt happen but you make it sound like it happens every time ..
I'm glad people you know haven't had problems. But it can happen, and it does happen. And when it does, it's bad. It's like I've crossed the road without looking when I was oyunger, and I'm fine. But that doesn't mean everyone should and it should be recommended.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

Hi-just a word of warning, I had my ears pierced when I was 16, it brought on a nickel allergy. My ears never healed, were constantly weaping/scabby, so I let them heal over.
My daughter wanted her ears pierced, and after alot of research on the internet about nickel allergys I agreed. She had them done at the age of 11 when I knew she would be old enough to clean & look after them herself. I contacted a local tattootist (sp) who advised me to have her ears pierced with a needle as there was less damage to the ears/more hygienic, cost £5 per ear.
Anyway, my daughter wanted them pierced where all her friends went, at a local beauticians. We opted for sterling silver as apparently there is less nickel in SS at the cost of £19 plus a bottle of tea tree.
Thankfully her ears have been fine, hope all goes well with your daughters.0 -
My eldest has just had hers done at Claire's Accessories about 10 days ago, cost £22, price varied dependant on ear-rings chosen, but included cleaning solution.
She had first piercing there when she was 6 and had no problems whatsoever, after being nagged by her for almost a year I finally agreed to let her have second piercing done, she is now 11. Both times have been dual piercings i.e. 2 assistants piercing together, they told daughter to count to 5 but actually pierced on count of 3 ~ obviously pre-planned so child didn't flinch at 5!
It was done in a corner of the shop and yes other customers could see if they cared to stop and watch  I found them very thorough with cleanliness, cleaned down work area, cleaned their hands, cleaned daughters lobes, wore latex gloves to take ear-rings out of sealed pack before loading guns and piercing.
There is always risk involved in piercing wherever it is carried out but I would be happy to use Claires Accessories again.MFW 2021 No: 33 £45000/£45000 Mortgage free @ 11/6/21 🥳0 -
At the other end of the spectrum, there's a thread on the Over 50s board about ear piercing which tells you all you want to know and more about piercing!
Do agree with the point about PE though: check the school's policy! Most I've seen say to have it done at start of summer, but even then they may not have healed completely.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi
Just adding to what others have said about school's P.E. policy. Teachers are generally not allowed to assist with either removal or replacing earrings, so be aware that this could mean a day without them - not desirable before ears have healed. It can cause a lot of unwanted fuss at an already 'fussy' time, children getting changed for PE, and I've seen some younger children get quite upset if there is an issue. Some schools will allow the child to keep earrings in during PE if you send in a letter accepting responsibility in the event of an accident involving the earrings - so this is worth checking out.0 -
Juno, the cartlidge in the ear doesnt shatter when pierced, so gun piercing will do no harm there whatsoever.
Gun piercings are a no no for other areas of the body i.e. Nose, Belly Button, Lip, Eyebrow because of the sensitive nature of the tissue in those parts. For example, gun piercing a nose destroys the cartlidge in it and more often than not leads to infection and poor healing.
newer piercing guns are designed with sterilized, encapsulated stud cartridges to reduce the risk of contamination of the gun. These are the type that Claire's accessories use.
At the end of the day I speak from the experience of having lots of different types of piercings. As long as you follow the aftercare well and keep the wounds bathed and clean you should be fine

I considered Claires when my 8 year old wanted her ears pierced last year but instead I went to a piercing studio called Bodz in Liverpool run by a husband and wife team which I cannot recommend highly enough. The place was spotless and they had hygiene certificates all over the wall!!
They wouldn't do the piercing until they had spoken to my daughter themselves and were sure that she understood what was going to happen and what they were going to do.
They did the piercing with a needle and then put studs in that didn't have to be taken out for the whole six weeks afterwards. I wiped her ears down with salt water when they needed cleaning which wasn't too often and her ears never got sore or had a little of puss in them at all because of the metal that the earrings were made of!
Also even weeks after she had them done we called in to see if it was okay to wear other earrings now and they were only too happy to fully check her ears out for us. Very professional! I had mine done in a similair place to claires when I was younger and I know which I would have preferred knowing what I know now. It is upto everyone to make a personal choice but after an experience with a professional piercing studio I would not go anywhere else.I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me saying "You're next". They stopped when I started doing it to them at funerals0 -
A year or two ago I saw a baby, no more than 12 months max, having her ears pierced in the middle of a small crowded Claire's Accessories.
I would class that as child abuse.0
