Leaving AOL

While we have been with AOL for a long, long time, this weekend calling India to be told any old rubbish at my expense about a fault with their router (they claimed it was our pc and laptop!), I've decided to cut my losses and go elsewhere. I've read through the guide but ideally would like suggestions of a new phone and internet supplier that really is good value, is reliable and when there is a fault, know how to fix it instead of attempting to parrot out a script. Your input warmly welcomed.

When you say "really good value" do you mean "low cost"? If yes then this requirement is usually mutually-exclusive with your other requirements.

Go to https://www.samknows.com and use their exchange checker. This will tell you who is available on your exchange.0 -
If you on AOL LLU, You will lose you internet connection when you leave, as you cant migrate the connection to another company.
You might also need to pay a fee to transfer your line rental etc to another company.
I've got 2 lines with AOL right now and im having to do this.0 -
Hi thanks for your replies. I've already checked out Samknows but I'm looking for real experience of the other suppliers. Someone, somewhere appears to have had bad experience with all of the providers but I'm sure MSE'rs will be a bit better informed.0

I'm with BE and my experience has been mostly positive. Any negatives have been so minor I've forgotten about them. They'll fit your requirements regarding reliability and providing good customer service (1st line support is in Sofia, Bulgaria, but their English is good), and they're one of the only ISPs who really do provide an Unlimited service. (Yes there's a FUP, but it's never been enacted for anyone downloading a lot - some people have reported usage in the several hundred GB per month with no issues). They're not cheap though, but as in all things - you get what you pay for.

Drop me a PM with your email address if you'd like a referral (we'd get about £15 each), and you can still use Quidco etc. for signing up.
https://www.bethere.co.uk for more info. (Yes, I know, their website is crap). :rotfl:0 -

You do not have to pay a fee to migrate from an LLU service. You will need to go back to BT on a 'return to donor', this is free but requires a 12 line rental contract.
Once back on the BT network, you can place your broadband wth whoever you wish.No free lunch, and no free laptop

And that is the problem. My experience with AOL/TalkTalk has been near to perfect, my brother has problems with BT, my daughters have problems with Sky and Virgin. The one and only time I had to phone TalkTalk the problem was solved instantly using the script by an Indian lady. The reason they use scripts is that these do actually fix the majority of problems. It's the luck of the draw I'm afraid, whoever you sign up with. It's someone else's fault.0 -
But that'sthe whole point. All the providers you mention are huge corprations using call centres, often offshore. The good ISP's uses small properly trained staff in UK call centres. O2 and Plusnet come to mind.No free lunch, and no free laptop
