Council destroyed my car full of belongings

I thought that the police/council usually put a notice on a car for a few days (a week or so?) saying that it's abandoned and will be removed rather than just rocking up and taking any old car which someone reports?
I don't get on with my ex girlfriend, think I might report her car abandoned on her drive and see if they take it

I don't have legal cover on my car insurance its only 3rd party F&T although I am going to ring them shortly to cancel the insurance lol! :rotfl:
Was it also taxed and MOT'd?
It's outrageous that they would hunt down and destroy a taxed, insured and MOT'd car without contacting the owner just because someone at your old address 'thought' is was abandoned. Surely once it was moved it was obvious it was no longer abandoned.
Forget cancelling the insurance, try to claim on it!Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

It's the council that deal with abandoned cars, not the police.
As as far as I am aware they do contact the owner. I have reported an abandoned car before, the owner turned up for it at the same time the council came to collect it, like they were expecting each other.I thought that the police/council usually put a notice on a car for a few days (a week or so?) saying that it's abandoned and will be removed rather than just rocking up and taking any old car which someone reports?
Yes, they do that here, it's usually bright yellow or pink.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
This might help you but it is the DVLA not the council http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?257527-DVLA-lost-case-in-small-claims-for-crushing-car
My other thought is that I thought cars had to be stripped of valuable metals before being crushed. Maybe they have your belongings somewhere
Maybe the last post might help slightly as well http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=1865
Thanks I will take a look now

Agree with this to a point - the "T" aspect of your 3rd Party F&T insurance should cover this.
That being said, I would be loathed to pay an excess, and only recover the value of the car but none of the content, for something which was in no way your fault.
I'd be taking independent advice and then suing the council if they don't offer to remedy the problem in full. Let alone the fun that the papers would have with a story like this."We can all fly as high as the dreams we dare to live...........unless we are a chicken" ~ Anon.0 -
Did the car have, VED, was it insured and were you the registered keeper and all the details were up to date.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

And registered to you (at whichever address) ? If not how do you know what steps were taken to reunite the car with it's owner ?0 -

be prepared for them saying that they will charge an excessive cancellation fee or similar to end your insurance early, despite the fact you have no car to insure!"We can all fly as high as the dreams we dare to live...........unless we are a chicken" ~ Anon.0 -
OP - as others have asked, was it taxed and MOT'ed. Further, was the registered keeper details current?0

MOT insured but the tax had just run out and I didnt have the log book at the time
tried to tax and then found out the garage I bought it from hadn't transfered the log book so that was in the process with DVLA. 0
