Changing from Virgin to Sky??
Comments
-
Just remember Virgin (fibre optic) use their own network and control the speed.
Sky use the BT network, Bt control the speed Sky users get... is if BT in your area is 5mbps, you can be sure sky will be slightly less,
It's sort of correct in one aspect, I'll rewrite it....
Just remember Virgin cable (part fibre-optic) use their own network and control all aspects of the service including the speed.
Sky use the BT last-mile network of telephone lines. Where they have their own equipment at the exchange (LLU), Sky control the speed, however it's still limited by the maximum possible performance of the given telephone line that connects you to BT's exchange, which is a limiting factor that applies to any ADSL provider.0 -
instead of slating me, why dont you correct my post???
What is the point? You think that you know about ADSL when in fact you obviously know very little.
You were politely told that you were talking rubbish recently here when you posted similar rubbish but you did not question that reply or learn anything from that thread.
It is not helpful to post totally incorrect information as some readers may actually believe the crap that you post. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I can confirm that currently Sky broadband is very reliable (I can't remember the last time I had to reboot the router) and it's not traffic managed. Getting stuff setup with Sky can be torturous but when it's up and running the broadband service is very good.
On the estimated speeds I think they tend to under estimate if anything. For my line I had an estimated speed of 5Mbps but I actually get 12Mbps. The upload speeds for Sky aren't bad either (compared to other ADSL suppliers I've seen).
The only downside I know of is that Sky do not support IPSec pass-through (for VPN). So if you get a router that doesn't support it then they won't do anything to help.0 -
Thanks guys for all your replies.
I've a couple of questions; does ADSL Broadband (Sky or otherwise) slow down in the evening at peak times? Are others on the same line as myself for example?
And is the wireless router decent? I wouldn't want a connection dropping off all the time.
Finally I've been told there's a 30 day cooling off period, so presumably there's nothing to stop me joining (which would mean switching my number across from Virgin to Sky) and then if in the 30 day period I found the Sky Broadband poor, canceling it and going back cap in hand so to speak to Virgin?!

The background noise on ADSL increases at night, its a bit like medium wave radio reception, if your router is running close to its nose margin limit then it may well resync at a lower speed.
Hopefully the DLM process will automatically set the optimum sync speed during the first 10 days of operation.
One of the main causes of problems is the poor internal extension wiring that people have in their homes. This can usually be sorted by the simple expedient of removing the bell wire which acts as a aerial.
Another is wireless, if their are competing signals on the same channel, DECT phone base stations near the router.
Sky have used several routers from Netgear and Sagem, I think the latest ones are n band.
Spot the spelling error :-)That gum you like is coming back in style.0
