Is it worth me getting any euros over here or just waiting til we are in France? (i have enough left from last year for a coffee etc!)

Up to you - I usually just take as cash whatever I had left, which is usually only about 10 - 15 euros. There is always a risk that your card won't work etc. but on the other hand most people are quite happy running the same risk in the UK.

All petrol stations will take cards, as will all toll booths in France, so if it was me I'd just take the coffee money and wait until passing the first cash machine to get more euros. The worst that is remotely liekely to happen is that you run out of coffee money and have to take a detour off the autoroute to get some cash.

You might want to tell nationwide you are going away before, although I never bother and have never had a problem with the card being declined.

Regarding autoroutes, we have used both the toll autoroutes and the free roads. It takes forever to get anywhere on most of the back roads, but if you want to spend the time it is very much more interesting. If you'd rather not stop over and have a fair distance to travel, take the autoroute.
