  • how do you get a cat to start going outside if it really wants to use a litter tray? I've tried moving it nearer the back door, encouraging him out in the morning before and after breakfast aas well as several times a day and nope.. he insists on using that flippin tray!!! if I take it away altogether then he's found a spot that's hard for us to get to clean and goes there instead

perhaps you could try putting the litter tray outside?
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

  • Tried that Tankgirl.. he just found a really hard to get at place indoors - took us a few days to locate the source of the smell and took a lot of furniture moving to get it cleaned, little sod still goes there if he gets a chance... even tho there's mothballs, orange peel and pepper behind there now, lol

    lol!

if its any help, i was taught that the best way to clean a place where a cat has been, is firstly with biological washing powder, and then put down some surgical spirit, or white spirit- cats hate the smell of the alcohol, and will stop using it.

just a thought- maybe have two litter trays- one inside, and one out. he probably wont use the outside one at first, but maybe he'll start to after a while??

My advice is to buy cheapo cat litter and mix it with shredded paper to bulk it out. The paper on it's own is a bit too whiffy.

Well, we took the plunge. My brother brought over some x-cut shredded paper on xmas (nice pressie for the cat!) ad he used it okay so we bought a x-cut shredder from Lidl (which is fab btw) and shreds even smaller than my brother's. He's using the paper quite happily so we now have a cheap/free source of litter, and are recycling, and no-one will want to try to piece the shreds together to read anything :>)

We also found out that he has a UTI, which is why he's peeing outside the litter tray. I've tried vinegar to neutralise the ammonia, and washing with biological washing powder, and covering with shake'n'vac (found in the back of a cupboard 'cos I never use the stuff) but to no avail, the hall carpet still smells. The vet said not to use vinegar because they think it smells horrid and so will just keep peeing there to 'mark' the place.

I've read the threads on OS (and checked the web) but they say vinegar, biological washing powder and bicarb. Don't know what else to do. We might try Felispray on the vet's advice (only after he's better) but that won't get rid of the smell. Anyone got any advice please? We don't want him thinking that bit of the carpet smells like and is 'litter' space.

    i

I discussed this with my DH for our cat but he said it would make the litter tray smell even worse. Did you find this? DH reckon the wood chip type litter we use hides the wee smell a bit and stop the poo being quite so pongy (although i clean it up as soon as i smell it). Also is the paper absorbant enough? Do you have to use a lot of it?

Just wondered how the smell was with paper cuttings and the absorbancy issues?
