Student Finance, away from home question - anyone?

Hello :)

My friend is going to university this academic year and has applied for student finance. She will be studying away from home but doesn't know the address yet, so have put in her own address in the application as requested.

However, she may not moving in official halls, she will most likely be moving into a friends or family members' home and paying rent and rates there, travel expenses etc. It's not immediate family and may be with a friend.

The question is, does the university or student finance require evidence/confirmation that the student is living at a particular accommodation before the finance payments are made?

If they are not checked or needed to be required then obviously she has all the time in the world to look for a place (at worst she might not even move out until a fortnight or a month into the course it depends when things are sorted).

But obviously if she needs to provide some sort of evidence from a landlord etc that she already has confirmed living arrangements, it may turn out to be awkward and most certainly means she will get paid late.

Any answers to those already at University away from home, or know anyone in that position etc. It is different for each university or is it protocol you have to have confirmed arrangements prior to study etc.

Thank you :)
I have worked at HSBC Bank in various departments both customer facing and process-related for six years. However, any advice given is my own.

You don't need to give a term time address when applying for student finance; most people don't know where they'll be living (or even which university) when they apply.

Thanks but it didn't really answer the question.

What will happen if she enrols at university still living at home not knowing where she will be living for another few weeks. Will student finance withhold her initial payment until she founds her accommodation (i.e. assuming she is living at home)?

Or do they not need to know where she is living and when (I.e. no timespan to get accommodation sorted, even if it is late)

    Really?

"She will be studying away from home but doesn't know the address yet, so have put in her own address in the application as requested."

The application was very clear and did say if you do not know your address please put your current address, hence why I actually stated that in the OP. So, what ONW is said something I had already done and already knew.

So no, he/she didn't answer the question.

Instead my first post said: "The question is, does the university or student finance require evidence/confirmation that the student is living at a particular accommodation before the finance payments are made?"

...which clearly asks about evidence re the term time address in relation to payments, not quite as ONW answered. It's alright not giving/knowing the term time address on application, but what when university starts and payments in relation to 'living away from home' are due to be made - also the fact that SFE will want the term time address at some point for correspondence. So it was actually very different.

Not sure what question you were reading.

Pretty sure you've now just shot yourself in the foot with your attitude to get any help from the experts like myself in this forum, but I wish you well.

Not really, it comes from the idiots in the other forums who think they know it all when they don't read properly.

You have to stick up for yourself on here because some people just interrogate you, judge you and so on.

To be fair, you seem alright, I just didn't like your reply when I said kindly he didn't answer the question. I was like, how much clearer can I put it? I apologise if I immediately thought you were another awkward one.

    ONW is she BTW.

There is no address evidence required.

But ONWs post is perfectly acceptable, as she is right, no-ones where they are going to live, especially have an address - so how would they provide any evidence until they've started? They wouldn't be able to. And there would be outrage if students didn't get their loans until a month after they've started when they can prove where they are living.

I did find the question a little odd given your friend has already applied. They would have asked her by now if they needed proof of address ha.

The easiest answer is for your friend to make sure they have moved into their term time accommodation by the first day of term. Why are they not planning to?

I wonder whether your friend is trying to get the living away from home rate when s/he's actually still living with parents?

ok the answer is no they won't

they didn't for my son who was in the same situation as your friend
you just write to them when you have the term time address - you're rather assuming that the payment will co-incide with the start of term - this isn't always so - your friend may have plenty of time to notify them of her term time address

btw- Taiko is an EXTREMELY helpful person on this forum who goes out of their way to give personal help to those who need it
and ONW is always helpful too - this board does not normally de-generate into the silliness of the other boards - so please don't make assumptions about posters.
