    Hi Colacube,
Not many rocky beaches in Norfolk, underlying geology means they are mostly sandy or pebbly. However at East Runton, just next to Cromer there is the remains of an outflow of volcanic rock which means that half the beach is rocky with fanatastic rock pools when the tide is out (my kids used to spend hours there with their nets and buckets!) while the other half is sandy/pebbly (and theres' a car park and a little beach cafe and loos!). it's also pretty good fossil territory, the remains of a wooly mammoth were foudn there soem time ago! To be honest, if you set yourself up somewhere either in or between Cromer and Wells it's all pretty close for the odd excursion...but the coast road is narrow and winding and does get busy in Summer which might be an argument for finding the spot which fits most of your needs and setting up there.

A friend of mine stayed in the Pinewoods(?) caravan camp behind the dunes/beach at wells and spoke very highly of it for it's calm, friendly family atmosphere (no club or entertainments).

Years ago we stayed at the Cromer Country Club ( the name is a bit grander than the place perhaps deserves!) which is up on the cliffs by the ligthhouse. apartments and a few caravans, swimming pool, small gym(?) and a few other bits...but it's located on the cliffs a short walk form town, but a long wooden staricase climb up/down to/from the beach, which will be sandy and probably empty, even in August (when we went).

    hope that helps

That is so brilliant, thanks again. Information like this is invaluable, I've spent ages Googling but its much better to just ask on here :)

Hi, last year we found a lovely little campsite nr Cromer.
    www.gocampinguk.co.uk

It overlooks a fantastic beach (Overstrand). When we went last August it was largely deserted. Ther were no rock pools, but plenty of little crabs, fishes etc in the standing water by the grommits ?sp? at low tide. My DS 13 and 4 had a great time catching crabs with a long net.

Overstrand is a couple of miles from Cromer. A little village with flint cottages and a (very) expensive pub.

I am going to try and insert a couple of pictures taken last year....here goes, I am a bit of a techno phobe:(

Anywhere from Sheringham, West Runton, East Runton, to Cromer is wonderful.

I also like Blakeney, but watch out for the mud and tides.

  • Horsey is a very nice beach and she is my favorite.
  • My favourite is sea palling nice in the sun has a samll pub and cafe next to it with an arcade the beach is sand and not too many tourists has sea breaks so the waves arnt too big but if you walk further down the beach you can fly kites etc they also have a sports place there where you can hire various boats and jet ski's. nice long walk down and back up if you have kids though. There are tons of beaches and usually find some nice little ones with not many people about

Favorite beach is Lowestoft if you want somewhere for kids to just play in sand, paddle in water. Not a place full of stuff for them to pester you for spending money either, but a small supermarket 2 mins walk from south peir for cold drinks, snacks. If you haven't decided on what dates you are coming look out for the Lowestoft Air Show.... Please put your £3 donation in the buckets if you go..... it horrors me every year when I hear how many people attended, and how little was donated. Its always a fab show and worth every penny, but unfortunatly the requested donation has had to go up from £1 to £2 and now to £3 over the last few years because of how few people pay.

And a note about eating if you visit Yarmouth. I can't remember the name of the cafe, but if you make your way off the sea front behind the hippodrome there is a little place opposite a church on a corner, it's a family run cafe. Eating there is a MUST if you are visiting, (especially the fish in batter!) but they tend to close late lunchtimes 2.30 or 3pm ish as far as I can remember.

Cromer is also fun, consider a bit of crabbing off the peir.... may be worth buying the crabbing gear before you get there, but defo if you're gonna try it pre-buy the bate, as it can be a bit expensive there. I usually get some 'cooking' bacon cheap bits.

Enjoy your holiday in our neck of the woods, we have loads of beaches very close to each other, and loads of other stuff to do, so you can't go far wrong.:j:beer:

It has to be Yarmouth - I know it's cheesy but there's so much to do. There's the pleasure beach, with bigger rides, as well as smaller rides for younger children. There's also some brilliant historical places to visit, such as the Nelson museum and Time and Tide Museum. The sea front is lined with the usual penny arcades and there's a small reptile zoo called Amazonia.
