Vue Cinemas - legal?

Went to see Transformers 3 in Oxford at the weekend (lots of fighting robots, but that's a different story
) and, for once, was actually hungry enough to pay the obscene prices for food. So ordered a large hotdog combo.
Maybe I'm being stupid, but I was quite shocked to hear that they'd run out of large cups - so I could only have a regular drink. I assumed they'd charge less because of this, but no...same cost. I asked if they'd give me the large serving, but in two regular cups, again no - because they have to be able to account for every single cup, apparently.
I was even more shocked when I spoke to the manager and he, too, repeated the same...and indicated that they were, in fact, doing me a favour by allowing me to still purchase the large combo - as it was saving me money over buying the large hotdog and a regular drink separately. Thankful as we were for his apparent generosity, my friends and I still declined to partake.
Whilst I think this is particularly poor customer service, and pretty stupid business sense (3 of us refused to purchase our combos as a matter of principle - £25 takings lost for the sake of 3 paper cups!?) - is it actually legal for them to try and charge the same for a smaller quantity? Just smells of a con to me...

I think you encountered a couple of jobsworths.
Whenever we go to a cinema we order a large popcorn and ask for extra drinks cups so that we can split the popcorn up. Never been refused. The man without a signature.0 -

Apparently your cinemas don't have such strict stock control measures in place, then
(which is kinda ironic...if their stock counting's so good...how've they managed to run out of cups!!?)0 -
Unfortunately it is their food you are offering to purchase so they can charge as much as they like - they do sound like a bunch of jobsworths though.Thinking critically since 1996....0

Or how about this... I ordered a drink and popcorn. 'It's cheaper to get the drink and popcorn combo' I was told. 'But I only want a small popcorn; the combo's a large one' I replied. 'But it's still cheaper' came the response. 'OK' I said, 'Can I get the drink and popcorn combo, but with a small popcorn, please? That way we both win! I get it cheaper and you give me less popcorn'. 'No, you have to have the large popcorn'. 'Can you half fill a large bag?'. 'No, you have to have the large popcorn'.
Basically Vue's staffed by idiots. Go elsewhere or just shrug and put up with halfwits. I've started going to Apollo. They're great there!"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

Yeah, it always seems too much effort to drive the 10 minutes extra to get to Cineworld - until I actually arrive at Vue and remember just *how hard* they make the cinema "experience".
I've seen all sorts there. 3 times they've not been able to work the projector, so the whole film's been cancelled, twice I've had to go and ask them to actually focus the thing - and once, amazingly, they'd obviously knocked the thing and it was about 5 yards to the left of where it should have been. With the film playing over the curtain and a big blank stripe down the right of the screen. It speaks volumes that they never notice these things for themselves, you always have to go and point it out...0 -
