I am very depressed and angry at having just been rejected following an ASDA online personality test I had to do for just a simple Checkout Operator job.
I work in retail. I also have a degree. I think i can realistically say that even a checkout operator job is not always simple...there are a number of procedures involved and the public really don't know the amount that can be involved. Today i reeled off a barcode from memory as i had to work between 3 different computer screens to complete a particular transaction....the easiest way to do it is to develop a good memory - so now my memory is above average. The customer heard me do it and was amazed, she said she didn't realise how complicated some of the procedures are. She knew it was going to be a complicated procedure to start with and was all prepared to help me, little shop girl through the process but the truth is i do this everyday, it's my job and she couldn't keep up.
She happened to be a nice lady though....but the stereotype about shop workers and shop work being simple is what is ridiculous.
A teacher the other day she said all her class had applied for work at a retail store and 'all these A level students were rejected, it just doesn't make sense,' she said.....
You know, what doesn't make sense is that the teacher didn't have the people skills to realise what she was implying by that comment. Also because they were A level students that immediately qualifies them? So many ASSumptions in there.
but hey it's my job, i've heard all kinds of things, you get the worst from a lot of the public but at least you learn what people are really like.
I enjoy the job, i'm stretched in more ways there in terms of developing leadership skills, ability to multitask and use my brain at speed than i did in some of the graduate jobs i've also done....why have i moved - i'm just a restless and curious soul....and there were personal relationship issues also which caused moves for me.
but it really is time that people stopped calling shop workers or the work 'simple.' The retail environment can see through people like that very quickly and will screen them out one way or another.0
