Tyres and Breakdown Cover

Heading to Orlando on Sunday and we have booked a car through Car Hire 3000 for the duration of the trip.

As normal when we go we book the "comprehensive" insurance package as I hate being pressurised by salesmen for an on the spot insurance upgrade as I am never 100% sure what is necessary and what is just total rip off.

When we were there in April we got the car (through carhire 3000) from Dollar. When were there we were asked did we want to upgrade the insurance to cover tyres and breakdown. I think for the 10 days hire it came to around $80.

Do we really need this extra expense or do some some excess companies cover for this.......If it came as a package with the excess insurance it would not likely be worth it as it would probably cost more than the Dollar pricing.

Use an excess insurance company, they usually cover stuff like this. The excess insurance charged when you pick it up is usually a rip-off, often you can't buy it in advance and they use high excesses/stuff not covered to con you into buying way overpriced insurance. But make sure you have sufficient third party cover, as I remember in the US the compulsory third party cover is limited to something which may not be enough - though this may vary from state to state.
