Is it worth buying items that state delivery times of within five weeks?

    Or will these be cancelled?

It's worth taking the chance Savvy. On your account screen there is a reserved items tab. Anything that has a long lead time (after ordering) is listed there. The lead times differ greatly daily as they receive stock. As a reserved item you can always cancel it with one click of the mouse if you get fed up waiting.

Personally I feel the Next Sale is just like the lottery...some you win some you lose!
I order full price from every directory, I obviously pay for my directory, I have a credit account which I clear every month...why shouldn't I have some perks? It's my personal choice to hover on my account page prior to the sale to try and get a decent slot. It doesn't always work, but if you manage that first slot it's a great buzz. I don't go mad ordering everything I can, I make my list in order of priority from the preview and go to the store sale if I haven't been able to get what I desire online.
Yesterday I left the store with the 5 items I desired, in comparison to a family who left with 6 sacks discussing how much they were going to price them for on ebay's free listings today!

Again IMHO Next do a far better job of CS than most...how many store refund your postage for multiple orders on sale day? How many stores give you a true half price sale these days?

Basically if you don't like their ethic, find somewhere else that makes you happy!

I think they must have a % formula of popular items out with customers that they expect to be returned - probably based on stats from previous years i.e. 1,000 tops, 20% will come back, therefore they allow 10-15% of that number to be ordered with a 5 week wait. Generally each sale, out of probably 150 items, I get less than 5 that get cancelled after a long wait. The only issue for me is when these are matching items i.e. a suit jacket and I have told Next I am hanging onto the suit trousers for when the jacket turns up but will be returning them if it doesn't come or doesn't fit well. They have always been absolutely fine with this.

Traybro - Its a Sale!! Get over it!! - its first come first served. I havent always had a VIP slot, this was the first time i had one right at the start and yes i had a list and tell me WHY SHOULDNT I HAVE A LIST OF THE ITEMS I REALLY WANT? I also got birthday and Xmas gifts from the fragrance sets. But hey i do that in M&S sale as well. I think to be honest Traybro it sounds like sour grapes.

Trabro, while I understand the vip slot will not be fair, at least Next should limit the amount of each item purchased.

I went to Next at 5am on Saturday, firstly to the children's and then womens section but I found the quality of most of the clothes poor for the sale price. The original sale price is determined with the expectation that most stock will go into sale at half price. Frankly even at half price, there is a hugh markup relative to the quality of most of the clothes. Next childrens clothes would offer the best profit making clothing section considering there is no vat on childrens clothes, but again the sale price would probably be correct as the original retail price but NEXT know that customers just buy at 50% because customer retail habits have been studied.

Next are ace at marketing but, fortunately for those customers like myself who have knowledge of sales techniques, I see through all the hype of 50% off when in reality a relative small proportion of sales stock would represent a good discounted price. Then its down to seaching for those few items and ignoring most. This is what savy shoppers should do anyway. The rest of NEXT customers behave like a herd mentality and its this reaction to the word 'sale' that NEXT marketing department relish.

Thanks hun, I don't have a credit account so I don't have a reserved items tab, just the emails confirming my orders. Very tempted to order a couple of items for myself but I am wondering if I order now will my order have priority over the same items being returned which may be listed again later in the week as in stock?

I'm pretty sure orders take first priority on stock.

Why? Next want to clear their stock and they are rewarding an element of customers who they value. From a very simplistic view they don't care who buys it; from a Cust services point of view of course they care, but the flipside would be complaints from some customers who use VIP to buy Xmas/Birthday presents and actually need 5-10 of an item. It may not be fair in a lot of cases, but I know people who go to a well known retailers clearance outlet purely to buy for Ebay.

I went to Next at 5am on Saturday, firstly to the children's and then womens section but I found the quality of most of the clothes poor for the sale price. The original sale price is determined with the expectation that most stock will go into sale at half price.

Absolutely not. There are margins certainly, but you never aim to put items into markdown. You assume an element of markdown at each season end on an item, but you don't aim to have a poor seller.

If you believe Next's clothes have a massive markup, then I could suggest 10 other High St retailers with higher margins and less reductions in their sales...

In essence you're saying that only some of Next's items are worth the value at 50% discount? The same as virtually any other retailer. You appear to be missing a key point; that being that a Sale offers the opportunity for a retailer to clear slow selling items to enable them to then bring in full price items in readiness for Autumn. Nobody wants shorts and swimwear in November.

Looks like a few more bits have been listed on the sales pages, nothing to get excited bout though - will keep looking during the week as they start receiving returns and it looks as though the free delivery code will work as well :j

Does anyone know if the couriers will hold parcels? Loads of mine have a lead time of 4-5 weeks, which is fine. Only, we are going away for 2 weeks this saturday and if they were to send the items early we wouldn't be here. I wonder if I can ask my courier (who is a lovely lady) to hang onto them until we get back? Or won't she be able to do that because of delivery times needing to be met?
