If that's a real problem then we are screwed as a society.
I do realise that and I agree.
My comment about you being more educated than I was based on your posts generally, not specifically those on this thread or about commas/full stops.
I agree that it's important to be as well versed with the English language and the correct use of grammar as you can be, but I do feel it's unfair the way posters are jumped on (usually by a short sarcastic quip) when their posts are lacking in grammar or correct spelling etc. (Not aimed at you ....just a general observation.)
Imo there's little difference between someone who lacks the ability to be grammatically correct and someone who lacks the ability to be tolerant. Both are lacking...just in different ways. (Again, just a general observation and only my opinion.)
rum did herself no favours at all by her responses on this thread and the other recent one she posted on but imo, she probably felt (understandably) got at and lashed out in return.
If you geninely want to help someone, you say something tactfully. If you just want to have a go, you make a sarcastic quip or a scathing comment. If you do the latter, don't be surprised when the person lashes out.
(Just wanted to add I thought your comment about the tip for when to add a comma of full stop was helpful but I suspect the OP was already feeling as if she was on the back foot and reacted accordingly.)
I'm not defending her comments as I think she was wrong to kick off the way she did but I do think many people round here could use a lesson or two in tolerance and self awareness. It's not really anyone else's business how we all write, we are not each other's keeper.
Tactfully mentioning how difficult it is to read long posts with no punctuation is one thing, doing the sarcastic quip thing is another.
rum clearly took that advice on board as her later posts were much easier to read.Herman - MP for all!0 -

We all have different ways and means of doing things; some have the patience of saints and some don't. That's life.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

I was just observing and not commenting until now - I made no sense of the OP's first post so I just ignored it and moved on to the next topic. In my opinion OP came to the public forum asking for help - I guess if she wanted help, she should have made herself clearer rather than starting to insult other posters who commented that she should have tried to amend her post to make sure everyone could understand and try and help her. The way she responded was wrong and no wonder it turned to be a slanging match. Just my 2p.0 -

Indeed. Just as we all have different attitudes towards grammar etc. So maybe we should all just live and let live.
(I'm aware that it seems as if I'm directing all my comments to you particularly, I'm not, it's just a general discussion iyswim.)I was just observing and not commenting until now - I made no sense of the OP's first post so I just ignored it and moved on to the next topic. Without doubt.
To be fair though, the way people write on here, is usually the same way as they speak or write in real life. I don't suppose it occurred to her for a second that people would find it hard to understand what she wrote, as it was so natural for her.
The site attracts people from all walks of life, all standards of education etc. I just feel we should all be more accepting. If we can't, then do as you did and move on, no need to post just to point out the OP's shortcomings.
Anyway, I seem to be championing the OP against all others now and that's not what I intended. As I said, I think she was way out of line. I just hate the way folk sometimes post only to make some sort of negative comment about the skills an OP lacks.
