OP, to answer your question, no you don't need to get on the Bigger/Better House treadmill. Loads of people don't. Warren Buffett (one of the richest men in the world) still lives in the house he bought in 1957. Presumably he could afford to move house if he wanted to but has other things in life that are more important to him. Or maybe he is just happy there.

Do what is right for you.
