I believe that if you agree to pay off the contract, you don't have to pay the VAT element, thereby saving 20%.

    Others may confirm this.

What is 'reasonable' is that you put the other party to the contract in the same position that they would have been in had you not broken it. This is the approach that a civil court would take. Which means an ETC equivalent to the remaining months on the contract.

If the service is provided the position is
(money received from the customer) - (cost price of the service provided)

Don't know about a civil court, but unfortunately, the watchdog is not familiar with basic economics.

The only thing that I could suggest would to be check if you could downgrade your contract to a lower tariff? I don’t know if this would be possible tho, if you still have a year remaining. Worth a shot though?

On many other threads throughout this forum, we are advised to negotiate hard with mobile phone companies when arranging contracts or phone upgrades. The advice is usually to use whatever power we have at our disposal (normally the ability to walk away to another company). My thinking was to do the same here (i.e., not simply to disappear, but to force them to negotiate.).

I think you are getting confused with the difference between negotiation and welching on an agreement.

YES, this site does encourage users to negotiate for the best deal, but know the importance of sticking to the deal you have shaken hands on. Prior to any agreement being made, everything is up for negotiation, but once the deal is made, all parties should be bound by it.

How would you feel if you agreed a £15/month contract and then after three months they told you they were sticking the price up to £25/month? Pretty annoyed, because they were going back on their promise.

You promised to pay a fixed amount for a fixed period of time and by God you should do it! If you are incapable of honouring a contract then perhaps you would be best suited to pay as you go in future.

You might find that your bad debt can follow you to the other side of the world. Ok they can't sue you in another country, but any one in the country you are in can still credit check you. Bad debt is a problem what ever country you are in.
The best advice you got was to sell the handset to offset the cancellation charge.

I would just like to thank the OP. It is people like them that help raise the charges for me and everyone else. If everyone paid their contracts the companies wouldn't have to write off these debts, or sell them on to a collection agency for a fraction of their value.

    So again, cheers.

And remember, a prospective employer will want to do a background check. You may well find a poor credit history will be a problem in some jobs.

My personal advice is to do the right thing and pay up.

Actually, as it takes many months of planning to emigrate successfully, I would have tidily wound down my affairs and would not be in this situation.

I think the OP just want's someone to say, "Yeah, cancel the DD. It'll be alright, nothing will happen...."

Not gonna happen, unfortunately. If you can afford to move abroad, you can afford to pay off the contract.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
