Car hire excess question

Hi Guys

I need to hire a car from my home town for a UK trip. I've used the link on this site for excess insurance (moneymaxim) but I'm a bit confused as I haven't used this before. Hoping someone can clear something up.

I've found an annual policy for £39.99 for anywhere in the UK, but it says that CDW/SLI isn't included. Does this mean that it covers things like windscreens, theft etc, but if I actually have a bump, it won't be included? It also says "single incident excess covered - £2000" which is why I'm getting a bit confused.

I presume there will be CDW to some extent with the standard rental and its just, say, the first £500 that isn't included, which is what I want the insurance for.

Can someone clear up for me how this excess insurance works!?

Thanks
Paul

As you correctly presume, this type of policy covers the excess amount, which can be anything up to £1,000 or maybe even more. If you involved in an incident the rental company will take the excess from your credit card and then you claim it back from the insurance provider. The policies generally cover damage to tyres, glass and under the car, some will cover the car's interior too.

Also read the small print as some of the companies wont cover a rental started close to your home address, insurance 4 car hire is within 150 kms.

Ask the company who you are hiring the car from about insuranc excess.

I had one for 3 days and they charged me £3.00 a day.

Didnt shop around so dont know if that was reasonable or not really.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

£3 a day is a good price, Avis charge from £12.50 a day for a small car and £18 a day for a large car, this only reduces the excess to £100. Glass cover is an extra £2 a day on top.

Yes, £3 is reasonable. That's close to the independent rate. But that isn't usual as you have stated. Also we don't know what it did cover.

Why is that then, everyone else seems to think its reasonable.

I took mine with Enterprise, excellent service, £17.00 a day for the hire of the car, £3.00 to cover excess

In general, car hire excess insurance is much more expensive. We don't know what it covered.

But the price itself in your case was reasonable.

If I don't currently have an annual policy from insurance4carhire.com I have used the link from their website to dailyexcess.com, which costs £4.75 per day - never had to claim on it so I can't tell you whether it's actually any good.
