                    Hi all.
I've a Vaio laptop with vista home premium, but having run an upgrade advisor check, I can't do an upgrade to Win 7 only a clean install which i understand means my computer will be wiped clean of all programs.
I just wanted to check if that means all the vaio stuff that was already installed on the laptop when i bought it will also go? will that affect how my laptop runs? looking at my programs list i have things like:
vaio media 6.0
setting utility series
microsoft c++2008 redistrabutable
alps pointing device for vaio
vaio information flow
Could someone pls advise? many thanks.

            the Vaio stuff will go
check on the Vaio site regarding W7 upgrade as to whether they support W7
I got some of my Vaio applications to work on W7 after it being on Vista however some just wont install/work0 -
yes if you do a fully clean install then all existing applications and data will be destroyed. it will probably run better without all the vaio crap on there. however, you may be able to re-download the vaio apps from sony if you wish.0

Agreed, most of what the OP has listed is just bloatware. The only thing of interest is the 'alps pointing device' which are the drivers that make your touchpad/nipple work, but these drivers can be downloaded from the VAIO website easily.0 -
many thanks guys, will go ahead and clean install and then d/l the relevant drivers needed.0

Yup, or if you have access to another computer/laptop in the house you can do it afterwards. Just make sure you have an emergency way of accessing those drivers.
Worst case scenarior you can always plug in a USB 2.0 mouse and use that to download the drivers.0 -
            Hi all.
The clean install seems to be fine actually, aside from the fact that my cd/dvd drive for some reason has problems playing DVDs. The drive clearly sounds likes it's trying to read it but doesn't actually play it. audio CDs are fine though. I've tried installing my office 2010 disk but again, the drives tries to read it before eventualy saying the disk is blank! Any ideas? Thanks0 -
Have a quick check to see that your drive is actually being recognised by Windows. Open My Computer and see if the drive is listed, usually called D or E drive.
If it isn't there you need to download some new drivers for the CD drive.0 -
I personally prefer a clean install without all the OEM rubbish - 95% of it is either there to sell you something (affiliate links to ebay, demo versions of software), or duplicates functionality which Windows does better (eg wireless network connections). If you do a full clean install, your life will be better, hair shinier and singing purer.0
