ok to me it sounds like you are not needing a overly powerful system, however with 4 children (and you) sharing a computer my thoughts are moving towards this
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/271598
ok now this does not come with a operating system however you can get a copy of windows 7 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173791 for £65 which should be an easy install, so making the total system £235
however being so cheap you could also buy a second one of these and put on something like Ubuntu or Linux Mint which are free operating systems (instead of windows) and so end up with 2 usable systems for ~£400
add in 2 second hand CRT monitors which i would expect might be got for ~£25 a peice and so for ~£450 you would then have 2 computers instead of oneDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Thank you all for your help.

You could also have a look in the dell outlet: http://www.dell.com/uk/dfh/p
They sell refurbished Dell desktops meaning you usually get a better spec for your money. They do not come with a keyboard, mouse or screen but do normally come with windows 7 installed and 12months warranty.
This one looks ok to me for a budget pc (£283.43) - http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?rn=7716&SC=&c=uk&cs=ukdfh1&l=en&s=dfh0 -
Even if it were a hardware problem, a new dvd drive and usb card would cost under £30.!!

I bought a small format Acer desktop (similar to those found on Amazon by searching for "Acer X3300 Desktop" ) and I've been very pleased with it. Particularly with children a desktop is more suitable than laptops but assuming you don't want lots of add on cards the small format has suited us well.
Once you have a new PC then investigating repair to get the old machine mended would get you a second computer.0
