Money in christmas cards/presents..

What are you all doing with it? So far we've recieved £20 from Nan to get something for my little girl (Which we did as she isn't able to get out to get her something herself! Wouldn't have dreamed of using the money for anything else as she asked specifically for us to get something for our daughter.) and we've had a £60 cheque from my brother (No specific instructions for what to do with it..)... my first instinct was to put it towards debt but was wondering what everyone else is doing? Is it wrong to use a money christmas present to go towards paying off a debt?

  • we always pay any money given specifically to our chuildren into thier savings accounts.

With regard to the £60 from your brother, maybe give your daughter £10 and pay £50 off debts, you can always tell your brother your treated yourself and your dh to something else ??

Buy yourself a treat I_E. If there is anything left, then put it towards your debts as a bonus.
Just because you have debts, you MUST NOT deny yourself a life.

I usually try to buy something I need with it rather than just paying off my debts, for example this year i've ordered some essential clothes from the next sale, my dad is getting me next vouchers & i will use those to pay off my account, so he can see i've bought something useful & he hasnt just given me cash which has gone on "nothing"

    Debt-free and Proud!
Why not work on a percentage?

You could say that 25% gets spent or saved for your daughter, 25% is a treat for you and your OH and 50% towards debts.

  • See that's the thing.. we don't need anything! Our daughter has already got TONNES of toys for christmas.. our new baby's stuff is all sorted and I honestly can't think of anything we'd want or need (Well DH wants a Wii but there's fat chance of that! lol!) except to clear our debts!

Then you've just given the answer to your dilemma I_E. You can, with a clear conscience, call that a usefull Christmas present.

I got sent £50 by a relative for Xmas. Half is going on my daughter, and half going on my debt. I've told my relative that she's buying me a debt free future for Xmas, and I love her for it.
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Current Pay Off Target : £1500
