3rd party mobile phone plan providers and reception

I've been told by O2 if I have a mobile phone plan for them through a third party provider I would not recieve as good reception as I would if I paid for the service directly. Does anyone know if this is correct or is it just a marketing ploy?

I want a white I Phone 4 and I can get this free with a £35 monthly contract through 2 mobile phone companies. O2 wont match the deal and have tried to persuade me to upgrade my I Phone 3G to the 3GS. I would like to stay with O2 as I have been happy with the service and extras.

    The latter.

Some people say though that the data connection speed can be limited. I believe that this is an urban myth.
